I’m completing a tribute story and I’m looking for a specific type of editor. I’m doing a tribute piece on HardDaysKnight’s Carry That Weight. Since it’s a tribute piece as opposed to just an alt ending story, it needs to stay in line with the characters/ storyline and hinted at ending that HDK wrote. Because of that it would be best if the editor was a fan of HDK and familiar with his works.
Basics:
Story is approx 28k words (heavy dialog so about 70 MS pages)
Willing to work in .docx or Google Docs (using Track Changes)
No specific time frame so no rush
My thoughts on the difference between a 'tribute' story and an 'alternate ending' story:
First a tribute story doesn't go back into the original story and insert some story/character changing backstory to make the new ending go where the new author wants. So no surprise affairs/abuses/mental illnesses/alien abductions etc. It's more 'work with what the original author left' and try to fill in any holes instead of the typical alt ending's 'I want the story to end this way' mindset.
Next the purpose of the tribute piece is to pay respect to the original author by trying to honor their characters and storyline but to continue it to a logical conclusion. In this case HDK left the ending with the main character wanting to reconcile but not knowing how to. Probably one of the most passive agressive resolutions I've ever read.
Even though I’m more a BTB/ revenge type writer, HDK’s story is setup for reconciliation. Of course HDK left his story with that happening pretty much FUBARed! That's why it took me so many words to hopefully make the reconciliation seem believable.
