Ever since WWII, the international order has been based on the principle that no country gets to seize territory through military aggression and keep it.

It was for that that the U.S. intervened in Kuwait in 1991.

How is this any different?
 
Putin's claim on the eastern regions of Ukraine -- that they have a significant number of ethnically Russian inhabitants -- is remarkably similar to Hitler's claim on the Sudetenland. That was why it seemed not unreasonable to other countries to let him have the Sudetenland -- the basic principles of nationalism (every ethnocultural nation should have a united and independent nation-state) were widely accepted.

Of course, that turned out to be a highly regrettable decision.
