"As we all wake up to a very different world this morning, I have heard many comments about how our country will look under the reign of King Charles III.
Many years ago I was tasked to stand outside the Alms houses in Chichester, where Prince Charles was scheduled to visit to open the new wing that had recently been built. There was a fairley large crowd waiting along the street, waiting patiently for him as he arrived in a helicopter that landed in priory park. Is was fairley late on in the afternoon and the weather was not great. He went inside and as he did so the heavens opened with torrential rain. Everyone outside, including me got very, very wet. The engament,as always lasted longer than expected, but as he came out to return to the helicopter l.
His protection team were trying to persuade him to get in the car and to go straight back. I was stood only feet away with waterfall of rain falling from the peak of my custodian helmet and my tunic soaked through. He looked at me and said to his 'staff', these people have stood out here for hours, the least I can do is spend some time with them. With that he then spent a good 30 minutes walking up and down the crowd spending time talking to everyone who had waited patiently to see him. When he finished he came across to me, and as I stood to attention, he looked me in the eyes and said ' thank you for your service', and he did so with geniune meaning and compassion. As we stood there for those brief seconds, despite him having the largest umbrella I have ever seen, he was wet through.
His mother has prepared him well, the country has been passed into safe hands...
