Any advice on central London bars/places inhabited by interesting people ... spend a lot of time in the City but I’m tired of spending days/evenings with work colleagues and I’d like to meet and get to know new people.

I’ll go for the sympathy vote and say I’m feeling pretty low and lonely at the moment so any advice is really welcome.

Come on over to “Hello from London” or “Ladies of London” and get involved in the conversation.... and we can take it from there. Although to be fair I’m not sure Central London bars are what you need x

Thank you

You’re probably right on the Central London bar front ... spending too much time drowning my sorrows

Don't drown your sorrows. Look for quieter pubs in the back streets. It's a long time since I was there so many may have closed or changed their names. Try off Bond St. The Guinea in Bruton Place used to be brilliant but avoid the 6 o'clock swill.

Where specifically in Central London? I am pretty familiar with a lot of pubs in that area. Also, buying a couple tallboys or a bottle of wine to drink in the park is always plenty of fun. Then go take a nap in one of the beautiful local cathedrals. After that, wake up and go eat some Indian Food. Then get drunk again.

US is our resident American who seems fully versed on London drinking establishments

I should move there again and give daily tours. I like to get started early. There are some good spots for morning coffee and eggs. You gotta get up before you get down.

Nowhere specifically ... I tend to end up in a Canary Wharf at the moment which is pretty soulless and very vey dull ... not a cathedral in sight and no decent Indian restaurants that I’ve found

Down Wednesday evening but pretty sure I’ll end up in the usual haunts with the usual people ... no cathedrals but maybe a Brewdog if I’m lucky.

I have never spent a ton of time around Canary Wharf so I will have to take your word for it. I have been to BrewDog Shoreditch and Angel and there is plenty of rad shit to do around there. I like to get into some of those smaller neighborhoods and day drink in those pubs. Seems like there are a few around Shoreditch Park, plus I like walking the canal there. Also some old punk clubs near Finsbury Park that are fun to do some day drinking. Hope and Anchor is pretty fucking legendary. And the Old Queens Head can be fun and weird at night but I kinda hate going out after 6-7pm.

Punk clubs anywhere are legendary... Hope and Anchor definitely... Half Moon in Putney ... used to love Dingwalls in Camden but that’s long gone (so many long lost drinking/angry music venues).

I know nothing about punk clubs. Have you tried South of the River, Deptford and Rotherhithe , used to be some good riverside pubs there, otherwise West London, Richmond, the Orange Tree and the White Cross, Cricketers, Prince's Head, White Swan , avoid Slug and Lettuce and the Brittania, Maid of Orleans, Marlborough, Roebuck and Watermans , all good.. if you have a taste for London beers, Youngs Special and Fullers ESB, proper brews.
Enjoy, hic!

It’s amazing how you’ve turned this into a discussion about pubs. It’s not about pubs it’s about people. The OPs looking for friends.

Strangely enough most of the pubs I mentioned are very much people pubs where he can meet , make friends, or , if he has to, just drink. I was merely making suggestions Otherwise if he wants to chat with us into the small hours , we're here of course and he is most welcome.

Plenty of pubs in London. I could name spots I like but they all mostly get the job done. Sure, Skinner Arms near Kings Cross has a different vibe than Hanbury Arms in Islington but they both serve their purpose. I like a lot of beers that lean towards craft because that is what I do. Beaverton, Purity, Bootleg and Uprising all make some decent juice.

I’ve never in my life made a friend in a pub.... but maybe I just wasn’t trying hard enough ?

If it's small enough and the customer is at least a little regular, I could happen

Best to go there at quiet times, avoid the lunchtime rush and six o clock swillls. It does happen

Hmmm ... heading out shortly so it’s looking likely that I’m going to hit the 6 o’clock swill ... not hopeful but I am thirsty
