The U.S. Supreme Court dealt an unexpected setback to the voter-identification movement, refusing to reinstate North Carolina ballot restrictions that a lower court said target blacks “with almost surgical precision.”

Turning away the appeal pressed by state Republican leaders, the justices left intact a ruling that said the provisions were racially discriminatory in violation of federal voting-rights law. In addition to requiring people to show a photo ID, the North Carolina law reduced the number of early voting days and eliminated same-day registration and out-of-precinct voting.

In a statement that accompanied the court’s order Monday, Chief Justice John Roberts pointed to uncertainty over who was authorized to file an appeal on behalf of the politically divided state. He said the court had received a "blizzard of filings" on that issue.

Roberts, however, also stressed that the justices weren’t deciding that the lower court was right to strike down the North Carolina requirements. The rejection of an appeal "imports no expression of opinion upon the merits of the case," he wrote, quoting from a 1923 Supreme Court opinion.

Pretty much 100% of people have to have photo ID here in Texas if you are over sixteen. We don't give shit what color you are.

So we think a reasonable resident should be able to produce one come voting time.

Some day they will hook up those thumb print scanners the DPS have when it's Driver license or photo ID time and NO one will have an excuse.

I always wonder how judges and liberals can get away with broadly hinting some people just aren't capable of getting something as simple as a state ID card of some sort. Seriously, I think it's incredibly racist to suggest blacks are too stupid or too lazy to get an ID.
As for the NC law, it's bad enough the court got rid of Photo ID, but to (presumably) not require photo ID for election day voter registration is clearly insane.
And now voters can now cast ballots out of precinct? Stupid times 10 and a real nightmare for people who run elections. Voting out of precinct means, logically, requiring each polling place to have ballots from every different precinct in the state. My town (including unincorporated areas) has at least two separate ballots to account for which fire district they support.

I despise Republicans because their #2 goal is to strip rights from women. I hate feminists because they are all about taking rights from men. Why would I turn around and go for Republicans and become the exact monster that I hate?

I'd say where they differ is feminists generally don't try and use religion to justify their hate.
