Logan

Just saw it, damn good. Probably should've seen it on the big screen when it came out, but it plays great at home with the sound cranked and an adult beverage in yer hand. :D

If we're keeping it canon with the X-Men (cinematic) universe, there's some inconsistencies, but as a movie by itself, it's boss.

I think the movie handles most of the canon issues with this ...

(Logan holding Laura's X-Men comic books)

Logan: You read these in your spare time? Oh yeah, Charles, we got ourselves an X-men fan. You do know they're all bullshit right? Maybe a quarter of it happens — but not like this. In the real world people die! And no self-promoting asshole in a fucking leotard can stop it! This is ice cream for bed-wetters!
Charles: Logan…
Logan: That nurse has been feeding her some grade-A bullshit.
Charles: I don’t think Laura needs reminders of life's impermanence.

There may be some issues with prior movies, but "Days of Future Past" should have taken care of those with the reset.

One of the main reasons I hate time travel in movies like Xmen is for that reason.

But I did enjoy the movie, especially the ending.

I can't stand it when movies deviate from canon. Love Star Trek but the alternate universe trick as a tool for a redux retcon is a bit lame. Hated when they killed Frigga in Thor.

Retcons and redux for the money not for the sake of the storyline. Just gives them an excuse to come out with a new movie. Goes hand in hand with butchering a great book for the sake of the simpler minds which just watch TV.

I believe you're thinking about Star Trek. The original cast was either dead or too old to carry on. I like the excuse in this case. The reboot has been excellent so far, IMO.

Edited to add: Chris Pine. Nuf said.

I think it's the best movie out so far this year. I think it has a decent shot to be the first movie based on a comic book to win an Oscar. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart likely get best and supporting actor noms.

it won't win an oscar. it came out at the wrong time of the year. oscar voters have notoriously short memories. that's the reason all the oscar bait movies tend to come out right before the cutoff.

Yeah.

if a movie comes out in the spring or summer they just wanna make money. if it comes out during the holiday season they want to make money and an award. if it comes out when the kids are going back to school from either summer or winter break it means they think it sucks and they're just hoping they can get some of their money back after the write off.

this has been your pointless mansplaining moment of the day.

Baywatch should've come out in January. I can't believe I got talked into going.

was it that bad? i was hoping it might not suck, but i saw san andreas.

wow. it came in behind gog2 in its opening week and that's been out for almost a month. poor zac efron. maybe he should try dramas again.

Watched it last night at the behest of my 21 yo son. I'm not really a superhero fan, but I liked the movie, too.

You're correct. Edited.

The original crew was not necessary. Could have easily been a prelude. The movies aren't too bad themselves. I just don't like messing with canon. Guess I'm an old stick in the mud. This is stuff I grew up on. All those previously impressed memory algorithms out the docking port!

*looks at Pookie's clips*

If there was a series called Logan, there would have been room, for such moments.

The movie was "just right."

I could have cried giant, snuffy, tears. I loved it, just loved it. Finally a nuanced story with mature characters played by wonderful actors. Finally something that feels like what I feel when I read good comics. They pulled off a real hat trick too.....basically telling the story of the X-Men - the first story - the story central to the existence of the concept. One where people who are different and well-intended flee the violence, hate, and discrimination of those that fear them without rationale or acknowledgment of their good deeds.

The X-Men have saved the planet enough times at this point that you want to tell the government to knock it the fuck off with the sentinels and all this extermination horseshit. But these kids? These kids come out the box entitled to start flicking the heads off humans like so many early peas. So you get why the kids are scared of the people, and you get why the people are scared of the kids, and mixed up in the middle is the one guy who never stops, and never quits coming... slowly.. grinding.. down. Wolverine in this movie is a thoroughbred stallion with a broken leg hobbling around, and realizing too late, that there is more to life than running fast. It was heartbreaking and wonderful.

I really enjoyed Logan. As a stand alone, I think it deed very well and wonderfully derived from what I expected. And I liked all the Wolverine movies as much or more than X-Men as a team.

That scene is one of the most memorable for me. It answered some questions. What still puzzles me are the details of Logan's aging and his healing abilities slowing down. I thought he was sort of immortal in that respect. I know it has something to do with the Japan trip he took, but I thought that problem had been resolved.

The ending really got me, though I expected it. The showing I went to, not one single person left the theater as the credits were rolling after his death. It was like,"What? He's really dead?"

I doubt an Oscar will happen. But the acting of those 2 was really outstanding. What I like most was Logan wasn't as fast action packed as the ones before this one. More focus was given to acting and the people aspect rather than special effects.

Good point.

The adamantium fused to his bones was slowly poisoning him and his healing abilities couldn't keep up. That's what I thought, anyway. But I could be wrong.
