I am so waiting for them to come around to my hospital again. (They do so every year.)

Long hair is not a good thing when you have broken your neck in the past, as I did.

I have managed to grow my hair beyond their recomended length of ten inches. (It's currently at fifteen inches.) I have done so with the only goal of donating it.

Maybe I'll grow it out again, but I doubt it.

It's not that I mind looking like Jesus on a bad day, hell I don't even mind how hot it gets here in South Florida, but the weight of it pulls my head to one side or the other agravating my old neck injury. This causes the muscles to tighten up which causes incredible headaches. (We're talking blinding nausea inducung headaches here.) It's for a good cause though.

Any one else here done this?

My daughter has donated hers twice, back when she was just out of high school. You're right, it's a good cause.

I considered it recently, but even after nineteen years wihout a haircut, my hair is still too short -- it tops out at eight inches and just splits or breaks at that length.

My granddaughter donated her hair to Locks of Love through the hairdresser she went to for a haircut when she decided waist length hair was too much trouble. When I asked about it a couple of weeks ago, my daughter told me that just about any hair salon in the Las Vegas area participates in Locks Of Love.

I was 20 years old when I chaperoned my cousin's class field trip to an amusement park. One of the boy's in his class had leukemia. He was completely bald. Didn't even have eyelashes. The kids in his class all accepted him and loved him for who he was. But when we were all standing in line for a water ride, there were other kids who were making fun of him. I was sorely tempted to kick them down the stairs but managed to simply glare them into silence. But the damage was already done.

It really pissed me off and I was venting about it later to my aunt. She told me about Locks of Love. I've been donating my hair ever since. I don't dye it, or use other harmful chemicals in it in order to keep it strong and healthy. I grow my hair out until I can't stand it anymore, then I chop it off and donate. So far, the shortest ponytail was 11 inches. Longest was 21. I'll be due in a couple of months for the next round. *smiles*

I've donated twice in the last 3 yrs. The first time was 16 inches long and the second was 14 inches. Both times i received thank you cards from the folks at Locks of Love. It's good to know that this unruly mess on my head is making someone else happy! :D

Min has done it twice.
She and her mom (who's hair was almost down to her arse), both had it cut together last time we were over.

She is currently at the 'fucking hair' stage of growing it again.

:D

My daughter did it too. Cat, did you know, you can go to any hair salon and have them cut it in a ponytail for you, then you can take it to any Cancer Society office and they will ship it to a wig foundation they support.
Thats how they do it here. Just as long as you have virgin hair, no dye or chemical treatments done to it, they will take it. Even if it has a bit of grey in it, they will use it for an older persons wig to make it more natural looking for them, or dye it themselves once the wig is made.

Good luck, give us a before and after will ya?

C

Sideways - 4 years and One week ago, I donated four feet of hair to locks of love.
Part of the reason was a ritual act of mourning
Part of it was severe neck injuries
and Lastly part of it was For children without hair from their various treatments.

My hair was to my knees. It was less than two inches all over when they got done. Its now to the middle of my shoulder blades.
I dont think I will do it again. But proudly applaud those who do.

I should have the first time I shaved my head, but it hadn't been brushed in a year and had turned into a big dreadlock :(

Locks of Love is a bit more relaxed with their rules and colored or permed hair is acceptable to them. That page has the hair donation form as well and the address you would send it to. :)

Yep, did it once at the end of last year. Hope to do it again.

Was so touched by it I started a thread Locks of Love

I hope everyone will check it out.

Indeed.
Min's mum's hair was bleached, they still cut it and then Locks of Love sell it on to other wig makers. Because they were donating their hair, the stylist cut it for free. Great stuff.
