What would you think if I told you the Fiance wanted to be an astronaut? Would you laugh and ask if he also wanted to drive a steam train or be a fireman? Or would you ask me about his CV and point me in the direction of this article?

Yup... finally British men and women are being given the chance to be an astronaut without moving to the States and becoming a citizen. The Fiance is thrilled, I'm terrified, but what's the point in dreams if you don't at least try to fulfil them? He has (almost) a PhD in a relevant subject. He is very fit, with perfect vision. He has flown fighter jets. He's a glider pilot. He has good all round science knowledge and is adept at computing and engineering. He even (don't ask me why) speaks a little Russian. He has as good a chance as anyone and he's thrilled - the application deadline is in 2 weeks.

Me? Well, I keep going back to the statistic I saw. 1 in 100 astronauts die. I dream of a life with the man I love, he has his sights set on the stars. I'm just hoping I don;t lose my dream to his.

I know this is somewhat bloggy, but I needed to write it and I don;t want him to read it and I know he doesn't bother coming to Lit, even though he knows I post here...

Better marry him fast. Womens' clothes evaporate around astronauts.

In spite of his qualifications, damned few people get accepted. Make sure he knows how you feel.

Let him try
He will always wonder if it could have been

This is the one I'm working to. We can have the 'I don't wanna lose you' conversation if and when he gets accepted. Til then, I'll be supportive.

I'm still checking the Times Ed for you. The lure of the mountains may yet prove more tempting than the lure of the stars. :rose:

Let him try.

Even if he doesn't get accepted he will know he tried and just as important so will you. There will not be those pesky little questions in your minds later on in life. You know the ones I mean, the "What if I had Tried" ones.

I tried never to refuse a worthwhile challenge when I was younger.

Sometimes when I feel the ache I wonder "Was it worth it?".

The answer is always "Yes!" no matter how much it hurts now.

PS. For some of the activities it might have been a more resounding YES! if I had been any good at that activity. However I found out the hard way - trying...

Like the others said, support him 100%. Even if he's successful, a 1% mortality rate means 99% survive (and you could be so proud of him in the other case).

Missed opportunities are the common bummer: "I could have, but didn't." He'll be able to live with being turned down. He'll blame you if you were to stop him trying for it.

Agreed, which is why I am continuing to encourage him. tbh he's not sure he could hack 6 months on a space station jammed in with a bunch of other people, so now he's still applying, but he's not taking it as seriously, cos he reckons they'll turn him down at the psychological stage (due to his resentment of sharing his personal space)! Oh well, let's fork out the money for the medical, then he can go ahead. A dream is worth a hundred quid, isn;t it? :D

ps- Zade, I'll hold you to that!

Well, I hope he gets accepted - for purely selfish reasons. It means you might actually be close to me here, since NASA has a huge presence right up the road in Huntsville.

:)

Actually, I think a hundred percent of everyone ends up dying at some point. Unless they're doing that really cool suspended animation stuff. That would be neat.

As far as the art history thing goes, I think we've already discussed that, yes?

except that this is part of a European initiative... for the time being. The other Europeans aren't happy, though, because the Americans are already planning to poach whoever gets chosen, but only after they're trained!

Ah well, we'll meet up sometime - at a certain happy event if not before!
