Working all day with a sick child at home, so I got nothin'.

However, the cello is my favorite musical instrument, for whatever that's worth.

Life is a lot like this thread. A topic gets out there and based in interpretation, the thread starts its daily wandering. He action predicated upon the previous action. At the end of the day the final thread is typically far removed from the original topic. And that's how life should be, no one really wants it totally prescribed.

So today is a challenge rather than a question. Do something that isn't typical for you and enjoy the path it takes you down. Then, of course, report back and tell us all about it...

I liked the “challenge” idea, but as my day was crazy busy it seemed unlikely I’d participate. But I just can’t seem to pass up the QoD, or in this case the CoD. :p

Anyway, after a little thought, and when I could grab a spare moment, I……….PMed a guy!

Okay, this may not sound like much, but I NEVER PM guys I don’t know. I’m polite, if minimal, when approached. For me, it usually requires quite a bit of board interaction before I’m comfortable getting into conversation. Admittedly, this wasn’t an entirely cold PM. He’d messaged me once, after positing in the same thread.

He seemed a bit surprised. :D

But all went well. I’m so proud of myself. *pats self on back*

As an aside, I'm in favor of Pmann learning the cello.

Wheeeeeeee!! :p Congrats on putting your shell side for a moment, or getting a bigger one :D or however you would like that interpreted. Dear God, I hope you didn't pick a psycho
See how supportive I am? :)

Speaking of which, I am also in favor of Pmann playing the cello! And making jello. Shots :D

As for me, I do new stuff every day :) I love love love change and new happenings. Even when they don't turn out favourably, I appreciate the addition to my experience points :)

This may not be quite what Papa Chained is asking, but I'm looking to learn the cello. I've been researching instruments and I'm looking to buy one. It's a new venture for me. I play a few other stringed instruments and have been since I was pboy (as opposed to pmann), but not a cello.

These things are pricey as hell and I'm not exactly sure what to look for. But, it's an interesting new thought to say the least. Hopefully I can find what's right for me and go for it.

Maybe in six months time I'll report back as Yo Yo Ma's replacement.

Rent one first...go from there.

My 5 year old has to learn either Cello or Violin as part of her school curriculum this year. I can't decide which is less offensive to my ears while she learns. Both would be amazing at the end but oh boy... the learning part makes me cringe.
I recommend the cello if at all possible. I am still scarred from the violin experience. ;)

That's what we're leaning toward.

It's a long way off, I know but depending on your plans for secondary schooling, instrument proficiency can be a factor. Violinists are a dime-a-dozen. Good cello players are a little harder to come buy and make for favorable treatment for short listing etc.
Offset against that, of course, is that the violin is more portable.
The cello will be a little more expensive than the violin as you progress through the 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full sizes. Secind hand instruments should be readily available for both.
At the end of the day, music should really be about enjoyment. Your 5yo needs to be able to have fun with their instrument. Make sure you find a teacher who is not only technically proficient, but is going to inspire and encourage your child's passion for music.

:)

Seems the cello is favored by this little corner of Lit. Whatever the challenge I always like to be bold with it. Don't allow the fear of failure hold back the effort made towards being great. Failing is easy, but the rewards of greatness far exceed all the rest. Steps off band box.......;)

But making an effort in whatever you try is very important. I'm curious to know how many of us hold back, don't give our all as insurance toward failure. The sting of failing when you've done your best hurts a little more than failing something after a half-assed effort. But is that how you want to go through life?

Listens. I've tried to make the topics broader, to apply to both Lit and real world. Making an effort, as it pertains to Lit, is making a half-assed effort with a playmate. Being selfish, only taking, not giving and then shaking your head when it doesn't work out.

Let's discuss, would the group at large prefer to stick specifically to Lit only topics? I will say that no one seems to mind when the derail/hijacking of the topic occurs, so why would anyone mind a subtle shift in scope?

This is probably not a bad idea. But I really want a carbon fiber one. I've owned several carbon fiber instruments and I love them. But a $6k minimum price tag for a first instrument is pretty steep. Not to mention the cost of a decent bow.

I am super busy so I don't even know when I'll have time to learn. But it's a goal. Eventually.

I also have a set of I played bagpipes and a chanter that I've never really learned. :(

I don't try loads of new things. I want to make sure that the things I do, I do well. I get very serious about the hobbies I have and I take them to a really high level, if possible. I don't like doing things half assed. I whole ass them.

So basically it means that I do my best when it comes to doing what I do. But that doesn't mean that I'm not willing to try new things. I'm just a bit hesitant about the things that I do. I want to make sure that I can devote the proper time to whatever it is.

As far as the topics go... I'm cool with either way. I don't mind them being about things other than lit every so often. As long as they make for good discussion, I don't mind.

Generalissimo Pffft, I have a cello you can have. It sits in my closet...calls to me...come play me...come play me. It's kinda like my telltale heart.

ChainedDaddio, how long has your thread been up & running? I think it is natural for you to throw a question, topic, and/or challenge out here that isn't Lit-related...and, there is usually a tie in to RealWorld & LitWorld.

I'm highjacking someone else's answer, for a change of pace. :D Sorry Pmann!

I'd go with this^, though for me it's probably less about wanting to do my best than just being incredibly single-minded.

No need for apologies; it was a brilliant post. :D Just come to my cello concert and we will call it even.

And that is a shame. :rose:
I have no idea what the topic is but the girls are right. Always !

The girls were just all talking about how they adore me and think I'm amazing and want to watch me play the cello. So yeah, the girls are right.
