Fate, real or just another pseudo religion?

I've never understood the aetheist that claimed that fate existed. Our need to explain the unexplainable is great, our desire to put order to the chaos is strong. But to live inconsistently is the greatest sin of all.

Yup....

Makes perfect sense. When you face war, you have time to think about what counts, and what our purpose is here. I took great comfort in knowing that my wife and kids were in a kind and loving church. They had friends who would do for them, and I knew if I didnt come back, they would be OK. That was 1991, and I believe it today.

I'm not an atheist, and I don't believe in fate. Nor do I believe that God micromanages.

I think the universe works by natural laws. We have free will. We can make choices.

God is Love.

I think I'd have a better answer for today's question if I were a bit stoned.

I don't believe in fate. I believe in God, in our free will to choose our own path, and in the goodness of the human spirit. But fate? No.

I believe in consequences. I believe that every decision we make affects our path and can, in many cases, force those around us to make decisions that will affect theirs. Even when something "happens to you" that is "out of your control", you need to take responsibility for the choices that put you in that situation, and know that your reaction is also a choice you make. A choice you are responsible for.

Surely anything that smacks of predetermination must argue a belief in some higher power. So...religion.

However, I’m not quire sure I understand the use of the word pseudo. It seems to imply any religion based on fate is false, rather than all religions are false. Not quibbling with your particular belief system. It just seems unusual for the OP to make such a sweeping statement of exclusion. And I would agree, to a certain extent, with your statement on inconsistency. However, I’d argue that it to live in inconsistency is the part of the human condition.

I don't believe in fate, beyond predestination by genetics or a Second Law of Thermodynamics drive towards increased entropy in the universe. I suspect that the whole concept of fate is a flawed human attempt at post hoc rationalisation to impose spurious order on the unexplainable.

If one believes in free will (as opposed to one's life just being a deterministic thread in a cosmic computer program), then that seems to me to be inconsistent with the notion of fate. Even if I don't have free will, it still feels to me as if I have free will — perhaps that's all that matters (i.e. cogito ergo sum).

In any case, I don't see that religion implies fate or that fate implies religion. It's possible that our worldlines are driven in a particular direction by forces unseen — like water down a plughole (mechanistic from the right viewpoint). The spider in the bath might see it as fate, whereas we would just see it as gravity and fluid mechanics in action.

I'd also comment on the concept of sin, but I've just realised that I'm far too sober to have this conversation.
.

I was suggesting that the use of fate, by some, could be considered a religion as it implies a higher power. To each their own with regards to religion but I do hold that some religions tend to be more pseudo in nature than others. But if you want to believe that flying monkeys will come out of the ass of an unwed virgin in 2019 as part of your religious belief system, then I might be inclined to , rightly or wrongly, imply that it's a pseudo religion.

Judge-y. :p

Hahahaha!

Seconded! The odd part.

Part of me really wants to know what prompted that question....and part of me, really not. :p

I'm sitting here thinking: what kind of monster brushes their teeth *before* taking a shower?

Followed by: why won't he tell us about the towel? What is he hiding?!

Props to VT for asking the tough questions.

I DO NOT KNOW

I brush mine after. *looks virtuous*

Still wondering what prompted that question.

Is it a character tell? An indicator of depth of character? Sperm count? What? :p

And I'm surprised she's not asking the really important question: when do you drink your first cup of coffee?

I mean seriously, that's important shit!

I had never even thought about it!

I could be interacting with people who brush their teeth before their shower every day, and I would never even know to judge them!

What does it say for the people who brush their teeth in the shower???
