Akin to online workshops, Lit. (or Lit. folks with Lit. support/permission) could put out anthologies to the marketplace with the help of an experienced editor or two (and thus have a de facto writing workshop on the basis of their edits). Early in its history, Lit. published anthologies of Lit. author's stories. I don't know why it stopped--because the big wave in such e-book anthologies came after they stopped.
Anthologies could easily be put together from contest winners (and maybe go down further on the rating list)--or a panel of Lit. members could agree on a selection by an open discusison on a Lit. forum thread.
A decade ago I did an online, on-the-net workshop internationally members of a then--major mainstream writers' website wherein the chosen authors got a publishing credit and a professional edit and the Salvation Army got the profits (and still gets a bit every year). It resulted in a two-volume print anthology (done before e-booking became the craze). (And, yes, Lovecraft, since you know who I am, all you have to do is plug my name in at Amazon, and you'll see the anthology still for sale.)
The Coming Together series of anthologies started here on Lit but has since moved to Google. All the book proceeds go to charity and most of the authors are from right here on lit. With nearly fifty books and millions raised for charity it is the best thing to ever come out of the AH.
