Today I turned off the signature feature.

Threads and Posts loaded much faster (I'm still on dial-up) but I felt that I had lost a significant part of the personality of the posters.

Are signatures important to you? Yours or other peoples?

Or do you have them permanently turned off?

Why waste the effort in creating them if they are not seen?

Og

They mean a lot to me. People react to details they see every time they meet someone, to the way they look and sound and even smell. We don't have anywhere near that detail on Lit, so any constants or regular things we can lay our hands on are to be treasured. I connect with your sig in the same way that I connect with your av - it's like recognising your face or hearing your voice.

Like anything, a signature can be overdone. I like them, tho, as little glimpses into the other people. I like those with links to stories, as it makes finding things easier. I don't particularly care for large sigs, but I don't MIND them per se -- truth is, the longer the sig, the less likely I am to see it each time it appears as I am searching for the post. I don't ascribe particular motives or meanings to the size or content of a signature.

Sigs give a bit of depth to our 2-dimensional online characters. :D I read them all - they are choices. Sort of like Earl says :)

It's like looking into other people's souls, in a way.

Edited to add: I really should shorten mine. It's chunky.

I turned them off, but I do still read them when I look at someone's profile, for instance. They're interesting, or can be, and give some insight into the person in a minor way.

I do still have a signature myself, but I often forget about it, since I have them off.

I find it amusing that some peoples signatures are three times longer than their posts, but aside from that they don't bother me.

They only bother me if the get obnoxiously long. If they are asthetically pleasing, great. I really only put my links in mine, I'm not big on prettifying it and putting pictures or quotes in. Maybe I just haven't found the right ones yet.

As one of the people with an obnoxiously long sig I'll go hide in the corner for a while.

But I like my sig and I'm keeping it so... :p

How long is obnoxiously long?

I agree with CharleyH. However, some of those "never ending sigs" especially the ones filled with a lot of graphics, can become a bit tedious.

Agreed. There's only ever been two people whose sig lines were waaaay too long for my tastes (and no, CD, it's not you!).

Anything as long as mine or longer. ;) I really need to trim mine, I just don't want to cut anything.

In answer to your question, Og, I agree with Earl. The comparison to recognizing someone's face or voice is a good one.

Your isn't. Neither is Min's, in my opinion. Anything that takes up more than two-thirds of my screen gets annoying, because I have to scroll so much.

I'm cranky about sigline length. And a hypocrite. ;)

Half a screen or more usually tempts me to put the person on ignore.

I'll go along with others and say I don't mind them as long as they are not overly long. One of the regular posters around here has an alt with a huge sig filled with big pictures. I put that one on ignore because the signature drove me crazy, but I didn't want to lose anyone else's.

*in the corner with the ducky and jammies*

If only the table option worked without putting a blank line above the table for every row you put in the table. There's a bug there that should be looked at.

Also, an enhancment that would allow Left, Center, Right on a single line.

I guess mine is a little long at the moment, but it'll get shortened by about half in a few days (after the year end voting ends).

I like sigs myself, if they're reasonably simple.

Nobody on the AH has bothered me.

Also I'm here so I can look up at Crim's AV.

Sorry havent read any of the other posts here so hope i am not repeating!

I love sigs - they show a part of the poster that is important or fun or sexy or interesting - long live the sig!

I like them too. The exception to that is many of the posters in the Playground that have siglines that take up the entire screen of my monitor.

I guess we divide into the BigSiggians and the SmallSiggians, with a smattering of NoSiggians (the rebels).

Question -- how many people who ignore sigs also have one?
