tech help please...

i just installed mcafee's internet security suite 7.0 (i never used mcafee before but had to get new security software... anyway...) and for SOME reason the mcshield.exe process is stroking my cpu usage up to 100% when i visit the lit forums... the cpu usage is bouncing far more than i've ever seen it in any other circumstance.

the mcafee bonehead and i were chatting online for about an hour this morning. he had me manually uninstall the virusscan app and reinstall it (cleaned the registry key, browser cache, etc.) from scratch. but the thing still wigs out here at lit... and as far as i can tell, this is the only place it's happening.

anyone care to proffer any adivce/suggestions? i'd really appreciate it. this issue is causing lit to be unenjoyable because my browser moves very roughly, almost hanging for a second or two at times.

thanks guys!

When you used Bonehead and mcAfee in the same sentence you had the right idea.....

McAfee is running a virus scan on everything on every lit page..... especially the AV's and sig lines....

i figured it was something like that... why is it that symantec didn't function that way but was plenty effective? and why is it that on the bicycle forum i visit (with the same basic design) doesn't create the same issue?

not so sure why this site would freak out mcaffe, and the bike one wouldn't. could have something to do with the virus scan thinking that Lit is porn, and as such a haven for viruses and trojan horses. I would recomend getting another virus scan, or tooling around in the options for the one you have. You can also tell Lit not to show any icons, sigs, and such in the User CP. I personaly did it for sigs, since people posting one work replies would take up a whole screen on account of all the BS they thought everyone wanted to read at the bottom of there posts every time they posted.

i thought of turning AV's and sigs off... but i agree with you... sometimes they can be more entertaining than the actual posts. lol.

i'm anxiously awaiting lynxie's new custom title too!

oof, that's the pits, ej. hope you get it working right! by the by, thanks for the inspiration ;)

you're welcome. i like your idea better. :) good choice. :)

well, im not too sure about that virus program and how it works, but most virus detection programs can be looked into and you can either say, 'Absoultely Trust this websight reguardless' or 'Dont scan online viruses' in where it wont detect viruses being uploaded only detect them after they are on. i personaly prefure them to detect after they upload because other wise it will really lag down your preformance online (because even if your on a T1 Connection it will run it down to the speed of a dial up modem just so that it can process all the information)

in extream cases, you can just turn the program off while your going through the net and turn it back on when your finished. but i would primarly suggest making literotica.com a 'secure site' manualy under mcafee and then the program will basicly ignore anything from this sight. of course then again, i would basicly delete the program give it back to them and download one of the better free anti virus programs out there, like lavasoft Ad-aware SE. (great for any adwear stuff and minor viruses)

i wouldnt use any that crap you can buy in stores cause it adds spam, along with their own spyware, and slows down you computer. You can download AVG (anti-virsus) and spy-bot (anti-spyware) free. You can get AVG for personal use free at http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1 and spybot (search and destroy) from many sites. My boy use to repair computers (now working at a bigger company now) and thats what he had all the customers download because it works sooo much better.

could this be relevant?

i looked through the settings (thanks for the suggestion pyro... i'd planned on doing so but hadn't gotten 'round to it) and there's a "heuristic scan" option in the thing that scans for shit that's not identified as a virus but acts like it might maybe be on.

so i'm wondering if turning this off will have an impact on the way my browser works (which i'm sort of checking as i type this). the book says that this will create a slower scan process but what i DON'T know is if they're referring to the maintenance type scan or the constant scan that goes on while on the 'net.

anyone care to weigh in on this? things actually seem to be moving more smoothly but i haven't been here long enough to say for sure.

thanks guys. and fr34k... i have lavasoft but didn't like the AVG product (tried it once last year). the pc-cillin product is the most highly rated software this year... and cheaper than mcafee and norton.

I use McAfee, and had to turn spamkiller off because it was interfering somehow with the browser I use. Everything was bogged down before I did--they didn't mesh. I'm hardly a computer whiz, so I've probably drawn an erroneous conclusion, but everything runs smooth as glass now.

thanks sotto voce... i'll give that a try next. turning off the hueristic virus scan thing didn't seem to change things a whole lot... so i'm trying different settings changes.

update:

i think you may have hit on something, sotto... i turned off spamkiller and things are moving far more smoothly than ever before.

and it's kind of pointless to have turned on anyway because it doesn't work with SSL mail (which i have).

it doesn't make sense that a spam filter would affect your browser but i guess that just shows how mcafee is engineered. i'll not buy it next year, i'm sure. for now, it was free (assuming i get the rebates) and i'll just use it for the year i'm stuck with it.

thanks again.

EJ: a number of people use grisoft's AVG. it has a smaller resource footprint i believe, so may be of some interest to you. :>

i tried it at one point (someone else suggested it) and, while i can't remember why, i didn't like it. of cousre, that's pretty much where i am now. lol.

did it perhaps interact oddly w/ your firewall?

i dont' remember... i just know i didn't like it... plus, i like having a CD for products like this.

an update that may be helpful...

i've done a lot of searching and talked to the (useless) bastards on mcafee's "live help chat" thign which i'm sure is really a bot. it seems the problem i'm having is far from unusual... and there doesn't seem to be a real fix for it.

HOWEVER... i learned a number of things in purusing all the discussion threads about this on various websites... and it basically comes down to how the spamkiller, privacy service and mcshield (virus scan) facets of the security suite vie for pc resources.

disabling the spamkiller (as was suggested) worked for a while. when new updates were installed, however, the problem resurfaced. others have had this experience too, i've found.

spamkiller doesn't work with my email (pop ssl) so there's no reason to have it. i'm the only person using my pc and i have dialup so there's no need for the privacy service.

what i've done was uninstall ALL of the mcafee suite and reinstall JUST the virusscan and firewall products. so far, even through updates, it seems to be working fine. we'll see.

ah. i see. thanks man.

have you any experience with this product?

assuming mcafee continues to work well, i'll stick out the year... but this is something i'd consider for the future (if/when mcafee expires/explodes).
