I have a nine-pound pork shoulder picnic roast.
How would you prepare it?
I have a grill, an oven and a crock pot at my disposal and can follow simple directions. Various marinades are in the pantry.
I look forward to your input and thank you in advance for suggestions.

Do you have a backup shoulder in the fridge?

Ur trusting this to Lit GB nutcases?

Search online man - play it safe :)

Crockpot. One medium onion sliced thin from pole to pole layered on the bottom. Pork roast. Favorite BBQ sauce. About 5 hours on high or 8 hours on low. Grab your favorite buns (the bread kind please) and have a bitchin' pulled pork sandwich.

My ex used to smoke pork on the grill with maple syrup and pineapple and these wooden chip things. I don't know how he did it, because grilling is man-work, but, good god, it was crazy delicious.

That sounds really, really good, and with directions I can comprehend! Thank you.
More suggestions welcome.

You're welcome. :)

It's good served with coleslaw too. Some people like to put the slaw in with the sandwich but that's not my particular thing.

If you like garlic, ginger, honey and chili paste google Gochujang. I am making it in the crock pot tomorrow. It's so stinking good.

Cole slaw and potato salad are two examples of specific foods that can vary wildly in terms of flavor. I have never tried the cole slaw on the pork sandwich thing, but if it's cole slaw you don't like on its own, you probably won't like it on the sandwich.
My sister makes kickass baked beans and so-so potato salad and mixes them on the plate. I just avoid the potato salad and have often thought that if she didn't mix the two foods, the quality of the potato salad would rise dramatically.

Two of the folks frequently at my table are ages 3 and 6. Is Gochujang too hot or spicy for young taste buds?

Yes they are. I actually do like both potato salad and coleslaw - at least when I make them. I just don't like the coleslaw on the sandwich. I think it makes it too slippery. I don't even mind the flavors together - a fork to gather a bit of fallen pork with the coleslaw is handy - but I just don't like it in the sandwich itself.

And I think you are right about your sister's potato salad. But then I don't like baked beans. ;)

Your grill or smoker needs to be capable of cooking low and slow. 225°F for as long as it takes.

Use Aqua's carnitas recipe!

:D!

Crock pot with a can of red chili sauce or make your own, one beer, 6 whole garlic cloves, one can of diced green chili, cumin, chili powder. Cook til the meat easily shreds. Separate fat and toss out and shred meat, add crock pot juices and garlic salt to taste. Put meat in frying pan with juices and fry down til meat has crispy bits. Fry some corn torts. Put meat on taco with a squeeze of lime, green onion and cilantro mix. Sometimes, sometimes not, I add shredded jack cheese. Salsa too!

I asked my boyfriend, who is a chef, and he immediately yelled "pulled pork!"

That looks absolutely delicious!

I usually do my butts on the smoker (low and slow, as thør mentioned), which provides an added flavour profile to the the pork.

I'm going to try your recipe though, using a crock pot. I'm probably going to add a bit of fresh, finely ground coffee to your dry spices, and swap out the beer for a hearty chocolate stout, for some additional flavour depth.

This sounds great but requires a trip to the store. I'll use it when I buy the next roast.
Thank you.

I found it funny that you only wanted recipes where you had stock on hand.

This is a no go for smoker meat, the saved juices are important to the recipe.

I've always thought a good mole recipe would be good to cook it in also. I took the same meat this morn and made a breakfast taco and added an over easy egg to it. Those oozing egg innards were yummy mixed with the sauce.

Did you get that plate at Fred's?
