There's a sad story of Mauritius (which is located off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean).

After the British passed the Slavery Abolition Act in 1834, a group of soldiers and police went to the Le Morne area to let a community of runaway slaves know that they were finally free. But the slaves, seeing the authorities approaching, feared that they were being recaptured and returned to their masters, and climbed to the top of the mountain summit and threw themselves off committing suicide by landing in the ocean.

The runaway slaves were not that keen to gain those valuable skills such as cutting sugar cane.

selling slaves was a lucrative business up to a point: but a whole lot of slavers just raided and took the people anyway. It's clear that no-one benefitted from the slave trade except slave owners, sellers, shipping companies and anyone else involved in the transport and free labour of slaves.

From the day chattel slavery was instituted in America (for the benefit of the fortunes of white male landowners and families in countries on both sides of the Atlantic) to the day it was officially ended (solely to destroy the economy of the seceding Southern states and not because America became "woke") well over 250 years passed.

Do the math on how many generations of human beings you can squeeze out during that timeline, on top of social and geographical changes, Einstein. Then tell us how much of a connection a people would have to a country outside of oral traditions enough to want to go back to and feel like they could just perfectly fit back into a groove. Tell us of the economic means and ability a person or whole family whose entire known world was virtually inside one state could have to move away to an unknown land filled with hundreds of cultures and languages within several nation-states. Not even many whites at that time who were educated beyond one language could just pack up and translocate to another country.

Just because they were freed didn't mean they could suddenly do everything they ever wanted to do the next day. White society would make sure they knew they couldn't, in a legion of ways over another two centuries.
