Line up for Canadian passport could be five hours long

There is a big increase in the number of Canadians requiring passports. We've been hearing for months about strict new rules for air travel. The deadline is now just three weeks away.

We have been warned, re-warned and then warned again, but some those needing passports to travel to the United States have waited until the last minute.

The Edmonton office is the longest passport line in the Country. Some come to the Emonton office after a five hour road trip to wait five hours in line. It is not clear why, but the Alberta capital is experiencing the longest delays in getting passports.

Across the country the lines are only going to get longer in the next few weeks. By January 23 all Canadians going to the United States by air will be required to have a passport, if not they will be turned around by United States customs.

The government says despite all of this they will meet the demand. You will get your passport within two to three weeks, unless there is a problem with the passport.

Even before these changes kick in, there is still a risk of arriving at a Canadian airport and try to get into the United States without a passport. By the book, American officials should let you in, but that doesn't always happen.

By next January it is expected anyone crossing into the United States by land will need a passport too. So next year at this time I expect to be reporting the same news.

Tomorrow sweetie.

And if the passport comes within three weeks that's a lot quicker than what was on the government's web site which said six weeks.
