semi serious question. I was at the gym, they have tons of tvs, and apparently the NFL draft was happening yesterday. Looked like 20,000 people or whatever were all standing out in front of the stage.
My question is...WHY

Its not a concert, its not a movie/tv show. Its just a guy walking up and saying "With the 4th selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, the New Orleans/Chicago/Indianapolis/Carolina/whatever team selects...Boaty McBoatface, quarterback, Ole Miss"...

Is that...so entertaining? I dont get it. I also feel thats likely true for the NBA draft and others as well, but thats a much smaller venue at least so at least well...you can sit down, and its closer to the stage as far as I recall.
So who wants to stand 400 yards away from a stage and see that? Plus wouldnt tv give you the analysis, see some highlights, get instant feedback on if it was a good selection...etc?!

Were Beyonce and Billie Eilish and Eminem and Kendrick Lamar and country singer du jour there singing?
Were players all signing autographs and giving away jerseys?
What am I missing?

Nothing

I'm in what seems to be a minority of people who are (American) football fans:

I don't play fantasy football; I don't bet on games; I don't watch the draft.

I, too, don't get the appeal. My phone told me who the Browns drafted before Goodell said it on TV (I clicked over during a timeout in the Pistons/Knicks game). Why go there and be in a mass of people (many of whom are fans of OTHER TEAMS 🤨) only to potentially have your team trade out of the first round and draft...nobody?

It’s the atmosphere, I went when it was in KC at couple of years back, after the draft there’s free concerts so I got to see Fall Out Boy after the First round. Plus as a Chiefs fan, we just won the Super Bowl so it was cool hosting the draft after. It was nice being in a field with other fans talking about certain things about the team, making fun of other people’s teams lovingly. There are other events like players signing autographs and fun for the kids. I guess you can say community. That’s just my opinion as someone who has gone.

The NFL has figured out that fans of these mostly Northern towns, that can't do a Superbowl because of Winter weather, can have this early party. And right now the NFL is king of sports in the USA.

No it’s free to get in, they usually have concerts after the day of the draft. Food and drink prices on the other hand are pricey. Cell phone service is also unreliable in huge crowds like this.
As are theft, some light sexual assaults, fights, and more undoubtedly

Security and police are usually pulled in from neighboring towns and it’s a high security presence. I don’t doubt things have happened but when I went it was pretty peaceful. Downtown KC isn’t the safest area in the world and me and my friend walked back to our hotel just fine.

You leave work at 5:15pm, tired. Traffic doesnt help the mood, but spotify is playing a few of your jams on your mix of songs and it helps the situation, albeit marginally.
Finally home after cursing out the asshat Tesla driver that cut you off, you fumble with your keys, open the door, and just want to kick off your shoes and turn on the game.
I didnt come to the door to greet ytou, Im not in the kitchen starting prep for dinner, you dont hear the shower running, so you wonder where I might be. Dropping your laptop bag on the floor and putting your keys down on the counter, you walk towards the bedroom to find me like this...

"Ehhh, Ill catch the second half you think"...as you...

I meant...100-200k crowds all packed together, theres gonna be some wallets/purses/phones snatched, some asshat fans from one team talk shit to some drunk douche from another team and boom, fisticuffs, and prob some hotties will have their tits or asses grabbed/dicks pushed up against their butts, whatever.

I don’t get it, I mean more power to them, but just to see who your team picks? Not for me

It was crazy last year in Detroit
#1 reason was it was free and there is not many things to do that at that price anymore
#2 FOMO it was promoted so heavy you felt like the only person not going
#3 it's fun, there were so many things to do from exhibits and autographs to concerts and parties.
Lots of people to mingle with, some of them famous
#4 it's weird I know.....but some people like to be seen, sooo many cameras and broadcasts from there to scream into
Detroit has a cool downtown and the whole state and half of Ohio and Windsor wants to be there when something is happenin
It looks like Green Bay has them in a parking lot, I didn't watch long
#5 free stuff

I avoid big crowds, not a merch lover or autograph hound but I went. It was a 15 minute drive. I went early in the afternoon just to see the display of all the Superbowl rings and the trophies. Shuttle from the parking lot to the entrance. 2 minute stroll to the display. The line was probably an hour and a half 😳 so I sat by the river had a cig, people watched and left unsuccessful. Still had fun.

Sorry for the long ass post and making you pervs scroll so much, chatty today I guess. 🤷

Boaty McBoatface...LoL
