Lightning bugs

i've had them for about a week, but not as many as i'm used to. probably the fucking herbicides.

This year's first Junebugs were out last night. They're a hair early.

Their appearance always brings back memories of capturing them in mason jars as a kid. Researchers at the local university was studying bioluminescence back then and paid kids for collecting them.

Our JBs have been coming in May. Must be global warming. :)

And their butts glow!!

Oooo, my spirit animal!! Once while camping up north my wife and her sister, her boyfriend and I spotted some glowing stuff in the grass, near a lake known for being a stargazers favorite. Sure, we'd puffed the jazz cabbage beforehand, but it looked like glowing worms. Upon closer inspection, they were Firefly larvae!!! To quote Eric Burdon, this really blew my mind!

Otherwise, lighting bugs find their way into my life in suspicious and wonderful ways. Saw a baby one the other day near the lake, and some biguns flashing me last night walking around Hamtown during Eid al-fitr. Pretty magical stuff.

Whoever designed this "life thing" got lightning bugs right. Nice touch.

Had June Bugs since April or May? Creepy things. Haven't seen a lightning bug though....

entirely off subject, but is anyone experiencing stink bugs? where i live, the past few summers have had a plague of them. apparently they were accidentally imported from se asia and are thriving. THOSE are the little fuckers i hate.

I love when mantids hang around our place. I know they'e watching me.

I'm not sure about other arthropods but many flying and crawling critters can be dealt with using... carnivorous pitcher plants. Set up a couple around the house, keep your screens closed, and empty the plants regularly. Venus flytraps are more photogenic but pitcher plants are more effective.

Hmm, if lightning bugs are swallowed, do the pitchers glow?

(SPOILER: No.)
