3. and, yes, pain is pain and it hurts. To a point, most people shrug it off (headaches, blood draws, bumps & bruises). What makes a man a "real" man is accepting personal responsibility for his actions. What makes a man a "real" man is compassion, love, caring for his family. What makes a man a "real" man is sharing what he has with others less fortunate than he. What makes a man a "real" man is his word, his honor, his integrity. There is so much more to being a "real" man. Books have been written on the subject. But I'm not going to write one here though so I'll be cutting this off here shortly.

Having fantasies or not having fantasies has very little to do with what makes a man a "real" man. But it does have a lot to do with how full and rich the man's life is, and how happy and content he is. I'll keep having my fantasies and my fun, thank you. I find that I am fairly well happy, pretty much content, and I assure you, I'm very, very real.

And while I know nothing of your father beyond what you have shared, burning the belongings of a ten year old child is not the act of a "real" man. It's not the act of a loving caring parent. It's the act of a very disturbed, dysfunctional human being. If that's an example you hold up as being "real", I would recommend you re-think that reality.

Sadism and humiliation is one thing with a consenting, adult partner. Inflicting pain and humiliation and fear like that on a child is something else entirely. It's called abuse. Even if he never laid a hand on you for physical abuse it's quite possible to grow up with emotional and mental abuse being inflicted every day. I know. I grew up in a home with two alcoholic parents and while I was never beaten or physically abused, my life as a child was no picnic.

Surviving abuse is the first step, Timberwolf, admitting it is the next. Now take another step and get help for healing from it. The "real" man accepts what is his and rejects that which is not, and the "real" man gets help when he needs it. Denial doesn't change what happened, it doesn't change the damage that was done, and it doesn't make you a "real" man. You have an elephant in your living room and you walk around it everyday, pretending it isn't there. The rest of us see it, smell it, hear it, can touch it, even as you shout to the world that there is nothing there.

When you are ready to let go of the pain, when you are ready to reject that which was done to you, when you are ready to grow beyond the bitterness and anger, there will be help. Take it, and learn to fly.

In my opinion your Dad damaged you beyond repair. You say that he burned everything you owned. I for one cannot imagine anything more cruel or sadistic being done to a young man. He took away far more than just your personal possessions, he removed a vital part of YOU and who you were. I can't imagine how painful that must have been for you. I'm pretty sure they treated you with just as much cruelty in boot camp. Sadly, you are what your father made you.
