i was just thinking about what that means. Basically you are permanently removed from society and warehoused until you die. So let's say the prisoner is in his or her 30's and develops cancer, for example. Why don't we just give that person palliative treatment for pain, and let them die as soon as possible? That's the point of life without parole. Why do we treat their diseases? It sounds cruel, but the sentence is cruel in a way.

Just because their body is being warehoused does not mean their mind is. They could lead a rich, full life. A monk doesn't get out much but spends his life in study and meditation.

My instinct is that the sort of people in prison serving life sentences are not given to a life of quiet contemplation so you may have a point.

I understand what you said about the life of the mind, but I think the've forfeited that as a consequence of their crime. After all they presumably deprived a victim of that opportunity.

I don't know, I hope benefits won't be changing in the future...

...FPC Pensacola doesn't seem to be too harsh of a place to spend one's final years.

For whatever it's worth...

Did you know...

...that in the last 88 years, since 1927, a total of 37 federal convicts have been executed?

...that in the 27 years since capital punishment was reintroduced into the federal prison system in 1988, a total of 3 federal convicts have been executed?

...that the last federal execution before those last 3 occurred 52 years ago in 1963, by hanging?

If cancer treatment weren't prescribed by a doctor, it would be considered cruel and unusual punishment.

There are many reasons for incarceration-

1) protecting society

2) punishing the perpetrator

3) deterring other criminals

4) making money for gov. contractors

2,3,& 4 might be served by prolonging a life sentence.

The fact that a prisoner might not have a full range of health care options as a result of his incarceration does not mean that he sacrifices them all. IF he has the right to make a decision about aggressive or less than aggressive treatment of a condition then there is no reason for him not to exercise that right.
