A job vacancy has come up modelling for a life art class and I was thinking about applying. Has anyone here done any life modelling - is there anything I should know?

You need two skills; One is the ability to stay very, very still for much longer than you'd expect-- Five minutes seems like an hour! Plus being willing to get yourself into interesting shapes once in a while. If this is nude work, the condition of your body is NOT IMPORTANT. Nor is your vanity, if you happen to have any-- even highschool students can tell a vain model.

And the other skill is the ability to tolerate poor artistic skills, if you should happen to catch glimpses of the student's work...

Other than that, It's a pretty nice job.

Drawing from photos is okay, but nothing beats a live model in the class.

I worked part of my way through college as a live model, and I can tell you that having a well-stocked head is a definite asset; watching people draw or paint is not entertaining after the first half-hour or so.

By the way, the longest pose I ever held was two hours, sprawled over a ratty old upholstered armchair. Most poses run from 15-60 minutes.

I modeled for a short while during college

at another college, of course! Not that I was shy, not in the least, but those were the rules. I enjoyed it, but like stella says: five minutes of immobility can seem like hours. I think that I was required to do fifteen or twenty minutes 'in pose' and take a five minute break. The money was good and I got a couple of other offers from the class.
My advice: have a situation to think through, back then I was able to outline some semester projects while sitting in the art class.

Well I've been on the other side, I'm a keen artists and did many life drawing classes. All the advice offered seems to be things I've considered. I dunno if I can stay still for long enough, but how do you know till you try? I can apply, right?

Vanity? I have some, but if not faced by a mirror could probably abandon it

As for a well-stocked head - I;m an author. Time 'alone' doing nothing is like a dream scenario for me. Laptop optional.

It's life art. I would be naked. And at this time of year it's more likely I'd be chilly...

You probably would be. And since I'm not a visually artistic person, then you should know I don't know anything about life art. I just know I took a free art class once and we had to sketch a naked man. It was NOT a pretty sight.

If you ever make it to the Art Institute of Chicago for their free art classes I'll sign up again.

I agree with Stella, sort of, but she forgot to mention one thing. PREPARE TO BE COLD! Brr, those art rooms are fucking freezing! It's a great experience, V.

I remember a little fan heater pointing at the model when I was a student - the room always felt sweltering hot to me! I get hot easily ... it's probably a bonus!

We always had fan heaters for the models! I can't imagine some poor soul posing without one. And the scedule was always 15 min. pose, 5 min. rest. Multi-hour poses? Not where I went to school. Unless they were broken up into 20 minute sessions.

I did some life modeling when I was undergrad.

It started kinda oddly.

I was catching some rays with a friend of mine in the yard of the house I was renting. Another good friend of mine was renting the apartment over the garage in the back yard. Friend #1 went up to get a "beverage" from Friend #2.

As Friend #1 was coming down the stairs she yelled out..."Oh Fuck! Don't move!" She was a Graphics Artist major...

so, she ran and got some supplies out of her car and proceeded to do whatever.

Don't move. don't move! is all I can remember her yelling.

She submitted her scethes to her advidsor and he asked if I would be willing to model for some night classes. Litgitimate night classes...mind you.

I asked...what...In a bikini?

no.


To this day...only a few folks know I did this.

It was a compliment...at least to me....plus it paid good money...cash.


I will have to say this...I was so fucking sore after each session. Had to move VERY slowly at the end.

Do it Mils...it's a gas to see how each person interprets your body and pose.

Ready for this? My mother modeled for the other girls in her dormitory and that was back in the '40's. She never did any modeling for money in the art department, though.

Coincidentally, last night my wife and I were discussing this with our 19 year old son as something he might do. He was open to it.
