I had heard about this several years ago but had forgoten about it. The new Tom Hanks movie "The Terminal" has brought it back into the news. The fact that something like this can really happen fascinates me.

I wonder how many homeless people living in this country, especially those who freeze to death in large number every winter, would be willing to trade their experience for that of Merhan Karimi Nasseri?

That story reminds me of the book and later movie, "Cinderella Liberty," a black-humor type of anti-military story. A sailor named "Ditty" Baggs is trapped in a Navy hospital, on the proctology ward, with no papers. He can only get out on on passes that end at midnight, hence "Cindereall Liberty." I didn't catch the movie but do recommend the book.
