I get that it was a plot device for incest, but was any attempt made at explaining it? I remember reading this story 1-2 years ago (most likely within the last 18 months)

I think it was a shorter story. Possibly just 1 part.

If I remember correctly, the mum wanted to have a one-night stand but she has a husband. So her twin sister says "Why don't you stay at my place whilst I'm away and you can find some guy on a dating app to fuck?" But whilst the mom is staying at her sister's apartment, her son visits and thinks it's his aunty so they start kissing. The mom is shocked and doesn't know how to explain that it's her and not the aunt.

They end up getting naked and the son notices that this woman has pubic hair which his aunt usually doesn't have, so he realizes it's his mom. They proceed to have sex. The next morning, the mom reveals that she is his mom, and the son says "I know"
