I read a story a very long time ago, that I can't seem to find. Hopefully it is on here, and hasn't been deleted. Feel free to PM me if it's not on site, but somewhere else.
Below is what I can recall the most. There are other bits and pieces that I can't really recall clearly, it's all a jumbled mess. Thanks in advance for any help in locating this story.
The story has a modern setting and begins when a young man is walking out at night when he's attacked. Some strange power saves him from subsequent attacks; white/good magic once and dark/evil magic the other. The magical world is divided into two camps, and he's an aberrant that can use power from both sides.
At one point, he's running from magical forces. One of them is led by a woman who plays dirty and calls a news conference to report him missing. She's got pull and it becomes a major story, and she's seen on camera at his house and with his family behind her. Live in front of a lot of cameras, she implies threats to his family in order to have him turn himself in. All while pretending to be a caring 'friend of the family.'
At some point, he discovers like a neutral or grey side that's filled with outcasts and exiles from both camps. And he becomes this rallying force for this third side that usually isn't very powerful or united.
He picks up some training on how to use his powers. He's raw, but has a lot of magic and being able to use both powers give him a lot of flexibility. And I think either his little sister or another woman is like a shadow rogue type.
At a large gathering that's arranged to introduce him to the major players in this third camp, a vampire enthralls his younger sister. He either doesn't recognize the MC or he thinks very little of him, so the MC puts down the vampire right in the middle of the hall.
