Let's try to resolve how Lit really does the voting thing!

Thank you for taking the time and effort to address this issue. My observations mirror yours...however...realizing there is nothing one can do about it...I have decided not to pay close attention to either the voting or the rating. When I read and vote, I give either a '5' or nothing.

We do enjoy this site, so let's just enjoy it as best we can.

Hope this helped to enlighten some.

mismused (smiling) :rose: :)

Amen to that (and that's what I've been trying to say all along). ;)

Glad you're smiling, Mismused. :)

P.S. If this kicks off again, I was never here. :D

I agree with you there amicus, it's all or nothing when I vote. I think a lack of a vote speaks louder than an agravating one.

It really is the pleasure of good feedback that makes it all worthwhile.

I think most of us write for ourselves and not for a number rating anyway. It's the joy of being able to share a part of yourself with a larger audience.

The trouble with all this Mismused it that the bombers don't do it because they are trying to affect your scores, they do it out of malice. They are sad lonely people, who don't care about anyone but themselves. Whenever they leave nasty comments, I'm thinking, what exactly are you trying to achieve, because words will never hurt me. Plus, I will delete your ass as soon as I've spotted it.

As Laurel always reminds us, the "5"s are the biggest distorters of accuracy. Not one poster above has complained. Fans or authors--plumpers--ringing in the 5's. Vandals are a minor nuisance, mostly.

Hence the 'bomb' problem can't be solved.

(It's like the 'spam' problem. Each organization wants the OTHERS' mass mailings labeled and banned as 'spam.'.)

SHE TALKS TO YOU??

I've never seen any reply or comments by the famous Laurel or Manu. I don't think they even exist. They have had plenty of opportunities to post a reply to this type of questions and never have, as far as I have seen.

"5" votes seem to be necessary to counteract the 1 or 2 votes. Yes they distort, but many stories deserve a 4.5 and don't get it because of malicious voting. "H"'s are important because they get people to click on our stories to read them!

I HAVE recomended a voting scale based on "10" where we could give someone an A- score (9) where as it is we can only give them a low B-/C+ (4) or an A+ (5). There really needs to be something in between. Too bad we can't vote a 4.5

My impression is that the voting system here is simply a reflection of giving people what they want-- or not. I have seen high rated stories that were horrible, and things with barely any notice that were very good.

This is a Lowest Common Denominator site. There is some good stuff here, there is a lot of drek. I believe the voting system reflects that most of the time, but these are votes given by anonymous strangers and s hould be treated as such.

in other words, don't worry about it. Whatever will be, will be.

I had a recent story go from 4.97 and top of the site top list to 4.32 in the space of 2 hours. I would have thought that the high vote was an error if it hadn't have been up there for the previous two days and 38 votes.

I can't agree with you here Pure, I'm sure there are solutions to this problem. In fact I just thought of one, that I feel sure would be easy to implement. If after five points has been given at least five times in a row someone then gives a one, it should be automatically rejected. Simply on the basis that five to one can't all be wrong.

Another thing that could be done is to check on those that actually give a one vote, just to see if its the same people everytime. The only down side to this, is that Laurel wouldn't ban their fucking ass's, where as I wouldn't hesitate. She believes strongly in free speech, where as I believe strongly that if you're a fucking asshole you don't deserve that right. lol

How about this for an idea. As it stands at the moment, when someone you really can't stand gets on your nerves, you can place them on your ignore list. Well, what about when someone who clearly just wants to piss you off with their snide comments were placed on a story ignore list.

Only here's the thing. When that person gets placed on your story ignore list, they can no longer see your stories. In effect you've then got the power to stop them from reading your tales as well as stopping their shit remarks and bogus votes.

Carl,

Didn't know ignoring someone kept them from reading, voting on stories, poems, too, huh?

Now if I only knew who they were? Any ideas on how we can find that out. Okay, okay, just kidding, but wish I wasn't.

mismused

What I meant was that another type of ignore list could be created, one in which you could place a person you don't want accessing your stories. Sometimes the simplest solutions are often the best.:)

It wouldn't help. They would simply re-register under a different name.

The real problem is...

Okay, so you've posted a new story, and like any author you keep tabs on how it is doing by checking the number of reads, the number of votes cast, and the average rate that it has acquired. The story gets 10 votes, and now has an H next to it two hours after it has been posted. Then wham the next time you check it out it is below 4.5 at 4.33 with say 15 votes. What this means is that you have five people who voted 5, and ten people who voted 4 on your story. They didn't have to vote a 1 to keep you from having an H, they just 4 voted you to death. YES, your friends right here can send you to the nut house by giving you a 4 vote, and that will be enough to keep you out of the competition as well. Do your friends stories compete with yours? Sure they do. Are all of your friends her on lit honest when they vote? How would you know? Those who tell you to stop worrying about the ratings make themselfs suspect right off. The same with those who say ratings don't matter to them.

The truth is people vote the way that they want to, and it has nothing to do with how good the story is, or isn't. A lot of people say that they love my work. I get feedback every day to that effect. But you'll never see one of my stories win a prize here. Why? Because I refuse to conform to the standards set by the establishment here. I don't write the way one would to ever get an E, or a W next to any of my stories. But when I add up the average of all of my stories it comes out to just over 4.5 altogether, I for only 15 entries I have over 2 million reads, and I haven't been here at lit more than 8 months.

Okay, from what I've seen from my little peephole...

If I open literotica and click on a link or a person's profile, say, it will open a new window.

If I click on a literotica email notifying me of a post on a thread, it will open a new window.

The original window seems to contain information for the time that said window was originally opened, yet, a new window may show different vote/tally counts.

That's what I've noticed, and lately in the habit of closing old windows. It keeps me somewhat up to date.

I, too, asked the question of disappearing votes, when I had two disappear. That's when I realized they were still showing in a 'newer' window.

doormouse goes back to her hole. ;-)

How many times would they have to mess with you then before they got the message, I don't think many? There would only be a hand full of people willing to go to that extreme anyway. I do wish there was less talk and more action over these things, because I refuse to believe that there is nothing that can be done.
