From Jane's Chimporama

How many chimps are left in the wild?

At the turn of the century, at least one, possibly two million, chimpanzees were present in 25 countries across West and Central Africa. Now, only four countries have significant populations of chimpanzees, and probably no more than 150,000 chimpanzees are left across all of Africa. Habitat loss, bushmeat hunting, and poaching for infants are the three major causes for the decline of chimpanzees in the wild.

It sucks.

I think it's safe to say that because of Hollywood, chimps will never go extinct.

Yeah, but what about the guys in the wild. They appear to be on the way out.

Spin's link goes a long way to humanizing them, which gives us pause. But it is sad that we exterminate our closest biological relatives.

Do you think it is a form of genetic competition?

We can always throw a few of em in the wild.

I dunno. What do you want me to say? What?!!

Could be genetic competition. Look what we did to the neanderthals.

I saw an interesting show on Discovery that went further toward humanizing chimps as well as studying their intelligence. Since Discovery repeats shows ad nauseum, it shouldn't be hard to catch.

Chimps Like Us

I am just a softie.

I love animals. I could go on about all the great cats, great apes, manatees, whales, and human cultures.

Lacking skills with deep emotional relationships with people, I try with animals.

:)

The way I see it, they'll be gone in a couple hundred years anyway because of evolution. It happens to everyone, including us. From chimp to neanderthals to man, its gonna happen.
OR
They'll get their revenge on us and in a couple of hundred years, we'll be screaming for them to get "your hands off me, you damn dirty ape."

Except sometimes evolution stops or slows significantly. Example: roaches.
