Disclaimer: While I'm NOT saying that the following is a "typical" situation, I am saying that is DOES happen, and that it's not an extreme or isolated instance (Because I know of several like it)
A female that I went to high school with. She'd worked on and off, but decided that there must be something "easier" than working 40 hours and "not having anything left after you pay the bills". So she got pregnant, went of welfare, and quit working. She got married, had another child (when she couldn't support the first one) and got MORE welfare. She owns a house which she bought with the welfare checks; she owns a new car. When her bills started to mount up and she wanted more new stuff, she applied for Social Security Disability for both of her children, claiming that they were mentally handicapped (they are NOT. they're both intelligent and get good grades). She actually got approved for SSI disability for these children. However, the Social Security Administration later (during one of it's "reforms") reversed that decision and cut off the disability.
At one time, I worked 2 jobs to support my child. I had "nothing left after I paid the bills" either. But I was also paying taxes which helped to pay for this woman's house and new car....when I had neither.
I'm not saying that the welfare system should be done away with. I think it is a good idea, if it is used as it was intended....as TEMPORARY support. Temporary does not mean 18 years or 3-4 generations!
