Concerts consisted of performing artists that actually sang, as opposed to lip syncing?

Performing artirts wrote their own music, as opposed to performing their lyrics with another artist's music?

You can buy an automobile with an engine that is manufactured by the manufacturer of the automobile and not the manufacturer of another make?

McDonald's used to advertised how you could buy a Big Mac, fries, and large drink and "still get change back from your dollar"?

And then greed, New Kids On The Block and Stock, Atkin & Waterman Music, came and destroyed it all.

Do you remember....

...when McDonalds sign was under a million burgers sold?

When you could get numerous gallons of gas for a dollar?

When weed were things that grew in your garden that you pulled?

When there used to be penny candy...OOOooo I loved those chocolate footballs!?

When gum was 5 cents?

When sports players didn't make millions of dollars and played for the love of the game?

When houses cost what we are buying cars for now?

Do you remember wearing....

Bell bottoms?

Halter tops?

Platform shoes?

Can you believe the teenagers are wearing them now?

Can you believe you are wearing them now?

there are plenty of artists/bands that write their own music and lyrics.. it's just that all the "popular" and "hip" ones don't..

well..

i say, FUCK THEM ALL!! (especially that Aguillera(sp?) chick! yeah! fuck her a lot!! ;))

Ahhhh, the 80s. lol O, to go back...

Actually Tiggs, I'm referring to the 70's. Up until 1977, you could purchase a Buick Electra 225 Limited with a 455 c.i.d engine that was manufactured by Buick Motors Division of GMC. By 1977, with the downsizing, you could purchased a Buick Electra 225 Limited but have a Chevrolet 350 c.i.d engine in it.

Some entertainment.....Do you remember?

- Before music labels informed the customer of "objectionable lyrics"
- Before PG-13 existed
- When HBO was the only pay movie channel
- The lines at the theatres to see the movie JAWS and when we all thought the special effects were soooo great
- Seeing Star Wars A New Hope and Grease the first time they were in a theatre
- TAB cola
- H.R. Puff-n-Stuff; The Banana Splits; The Land of the Lost
- When Morgan Freeman was on the Electric Company

Well, I was reminiscing on my childhood. having been boring in '77, mine was in the 80s. :)

Penny candy...wax lips, candy cigarettes, fish candy, jaw breakers, atomic fireballs...a whole bag of candy for a nickel...

The Five and Dime ( but maybe that was only in the area I live in), a place to buy anything and everything...

Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Alice Cooper, Iron Butterfly...were considered Heavy Metal Bands...

Milk in school was 3 cents, ice cream was a nickel, school lunches were 35 cents...

It cost 75 cents to go to the Saturday Matinee at the theater and popcorn was 25 cents...

Do you remember when "customer service" meant just that? Or why they named it "Dollar Rent a Car"? (You could rent VW Beetle's from them for a dollar a day.)

All that preppie stuff?

Watches with changeable bands to all different colors styles

Those round wooden handle pocketbooks with covers that were changeable attached with buttons

those belt buckles with charming metal likenesses (starfish, hearts, sand dollars, etc)that hook in the front with interchangeable colored belt straps that were meant to be worn with....khakis made of every color in the largest pack crayola crayon box

penny loafers and "duck" shoes
http://megsplace.com/dolls/hatnature.gif

toothpicks dipped in cinnamon oil
Saturday matinees with ever new episodes of serials
hoola hoops
poodle skirts
angora sweaters
cars with real fins
the twist
the original Star Trek
I Love Lucy, not in reruns
The Beatles on Ed Sullivan
1957 Corvette with fuel injection
ducktails
greasers
sporting events you could actually afford to attend

Lots of generations represented here.

OMG, I remember when there wasn't cable TV....

but I think you can still buy Tab, can't you? That came out before diet Pepsi <gasp>

Do you remember when they used to sell fake pierced earrings? They screwed on, but looked pierced LOL.

And those cold drink coolers where the bottles sat in cold water... I used to love those. They had a bottle opener attached to the side, too.

And macrame... tie-dye... making frothy candles in brandy snifters... bead curtains....

Ok, now I feel old.

I just bought my son one a couple of weeks ago ... but sadly it doesn't work.

They just don't make things like they used to :(

Remember when you got your allowance and you could actually buy something GOOD when you were a kid?

now for a dollar all you can get are two cheeseburgers from Mcdonalds on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Can you still buy TAB? I've never seen commercials or anything in years. It's been at least a decade maybe more since I've seen it in a store here on the East Coast. It was the Coca Cola diet cola product before Diet Coke.

And yes I had some of those earrings

HA! They did away with that here a year ago, when I still managed at one. That was the highlight of the 5 years I worked there.

I'm not old, DriveSouth. Just aged to perfection.

How about S & H green stamps? Remember those?

And when you choose where to buy your gasoline by what they were giving away with each fill-up? And you had to stick your head out the window to smell the gas, because they had someone to pump it and it didn't cost extra. They checked under your hood every time you stopped.

Oh, and as summer approaches, Vacation Bible school, down at the church was 2 weeks long and you got to make great stuff and play all the fun games, Red Rover Red Rover and all the others.

Romanticizing the Past Much?

They still do, you're just listening to the wrong music and/or attending the wrong concerts. And lip synching isn't exactly brand new. The movie Carousel uses lip synching because the black actress that sang the songs couldn't be integrated into the all-white cast. It's always been a rip-off, but it's not new.

Performing artists wrote their own music, as opposed to performing their lyrics with another artist's music?
See above. Not all those people wrote their own music, some of the best artists didn't. Billie Holiday, Etta James, Lena Horne...many of the great jazz and blues artists sang "standards" written by others, in front of big bands arranged by others, counting on the uniqueness of their voices and delivery to make them their own. Plus, plenty of people do their own stuff. Singer/songwriters are out there. Take five minutes to look through liner notes, and you can easily find them. Sheesh, even Madonna does some of her own writing. It's not that hard to find.

You can buy an automobile with an engine that is manufactured by the manufacturer of the automobile and not the manufacturer of another make?
Not sure I understand the complaint here. So, outsourcing is wrong? Even if it lowers the final price and provides a better product? Why is Fordism (semi-automated factory lines) okay, but outsourcing not?
Besides, just because you could buy a car made by one manufacturer in the 70s doesn't mean that you could buy gas for that car!

McDonald's used to advertise how you could buy a Big Mac, fries, and large drink and "still get change back from your dollar"?

It's called inflation. Remember when minimum wage was $1.35 an hour? It all balances out, doesn't it?

Here's a few to add--
Remember apartheid?
Agent Orange?
Richard Nixon's silent majority?
The (70s) oil crisis?
the active draft?
Rust, orange, avocado, and mustard as the dominant colors of an entire decade?
Remember when there was no internet to use in the public wish for the good old days?

I'm sorry to crush anyone's nostalgia. But all the of "good ole' days" stuff is awfully selective in its memory, and it just drives me crazy. This is the third such thing I've read on the net today...the irony of which amazes me.

And, at a certain point, it leads to things like censorship and the reversal of human rights. Just ask Strom Thurmond. He's still playing the game "Remember when all the women and the coloreds just kept their damned mouths shut?"
