Let The Fire Be Started (OOC-Invitation)

*NOTE* This is an invitation only thread. However, if you have interest in joining/contributing please let me know via PM

This is just a place for random thoughts and ideas that you guys might have in regards to the thread.

Anyways, as a friend described it this thread takes place kind of like the late 19th/early 20th century. Like basic repeating rifles, six shot revolvers, that sorta deal. There are other weapons that will play a major part of the story, like swords, knives, spears, etc.

You can either post as: one of the freedom fighters under the command of Kitty

or

You can post as one of the soldiers fighting under the command of the oppressive dictator that lives within a strong fortress in the middle of a large city. I haven't fully finished fleshing out the details so any suggestions are welcome.

Some background for the thread (More Information will be added once I get to it)
---

There are three main continents: A B and C (Names given below)

Continent A is divided into three main islands, Piria, Shyrea, and Isis. Together, however, they exist as the Tri-Island Federation, and are under the control of a weak democracy. The only reason they are able to survive in the harsh world is because they have abundant natural resources and are able to buy off their enemies.

Piria

Is the second most inhabited of the three main islands. There is a large forest towards the northern end of the island, known as Fierce Spring Woods. Within the forest a small band of ruffians make their hideout in a place known as Thief's Haven, and they provide a great deal of trouble to the ships leaving the island and entering its ports. The exact number of thieves is unknown, though it's speculated they number no more than 40 or 50. To the east of the forest are a small chain of hills, the tallest of which has been named The Unnamed Mountain (for comical purposes I'm sure).

At the foot of these hills is the ancient City of Temples, a thriving city that was created well over two thousand years ago. Over 400,000 humans dwell within its guarded walls, and it is home to the largest harbor on the Piria; dozens of ships moving in and out of its port daily. Crime is relatively non-existent, save for the trouble that thieves contribute now and then.

A small river runs south of the City and stops just before the southern end of the island. Along its banks a few small villages make their home, with trade moving back and forth between themselves and the City to the north.

Shyrea

This island lies just a little southwest of Piria, but is the least inhabited of the three. A large mountainous region covers the southwest portion of the island, making it extremely difficult to farm and produce much of anything. The large mountains do provide excellent coverage for hiding; nearly a hundred or so caves are capable of holding in excess of 10 people with plenty of room to move around.

The rest of the island is home to the largest forest on the planet, known as Evergreen Forest. The only real appeal of this island are the beaches that line it's northern coast.

Isis

Is the most inhabited island of the three, and also the biggest in terms of size. The capital of the Tri-Island Federation is houses on this island, in a city called Sheran, which has a population of roughly 2 million. Isis has lowlands covering most the northwest and is rich in agricultural and natural resources. Scattered villages line its coast and various rivers, populations ranging from 200 to 20,000. Small mountain chains line the southwest but turn into smaller hills once reaching the southeast tip of the island.

Sheran is the capital of Isis, housing well over 2 million people of various ethnicities. It is within this city that delegates from around the Federation gather together to discuss financial matters, matters of state, and internal improvements. While the leaders profess that they do everything in the best interest of the people, more often than not the delegates are corrupt aristocrats that have ties to the Patterson regime. A small military force protects the city, though it is fairly inept at putting together a strong and well disciplined organization. There have been rumors that Patterson desires to control the city, and subsequently the entire Federation.

Concedel is the continent where the majority of the story will take place. It is the largest of the three major land masses (putting aside the fact that Continent A is made up of islands). There are some small mountain ranges to the north and northeast, coming to a stop right behind the city where Lord Protector Patterson makes his abode. The city itself boasts a large population, though by no means are the people content with their lives. Aristocrats hold the majority of power and are known to use every means possible to ensure their strict control over the masses. Free speech is extremely limited, and this stretches past the spoken word to include print, propaganda, etc.

South of the city is another small chain of mountains, where the Gryphon Riders have gathered together in a site known only to them as New Arrow Camp. A large and dense forest masks their activity and keeps them at the doorsteps of their enemy. Leading south of these mountains are two small rivers which empty out into a lake near the southern end of the continent. Lush plains with ample rainstorms make it possible to grow an abundant supply of food, though the continent is otherwise short of natural resources.

Despite the large size of the continent, power has been under the control of one man: The Lord Protector Patterson. There have been recent strains on the relationships between the other nations in the world, though he could care less if they collapsed. It would give him an excuse to launch preemptive attacks and simply add to his already large empire. Fairly recently a small band of former soldiers under his army have rebelled, calling themselves The Gryphon Riders and seek to overthrow his household. The small skirmishes that have been fought have proved the determination and resourcefulness of the renegades, though the Lord Protector worries not and believes their tiny force will be crushed quickly.

Greenland is uninhabited, as nearly 90% of the continent is covered in ice. The 10% that isn't covered in ice is an area that is known as the Valley of Elements: an oddity of nature itself as there are rumors a storm is constantly raging on, never ending and also never moving from its location.

The map is obviously a crude but quick design, just giving you an idea of their shapes and sizes. I'm currently working on a more detailed (and color coded) map to give a better understanding of where things are in relation to each other. It might take some time though

*Greenland was formerly Continent C*
*Concedel was formerly Continent B*

Name: Kitty Pride (not to be confused with the X-Men version)
Age: 27 years old
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 121 lbs.
Measurements: 34D-25-36
Hair: Light Brown
Eyes: Amber

Appearance: Kitty is fair of face, with soft tan skin, amber eyes, and shoulder length light brown hair. She isn't built like an amazon, but neither is she as delicate as a flower. Years of combat have shaped her into a strong person, but she remains a woman nonetheless. Like most of the combat fighters, Kitty usually wears a dark color shirt (either black or dark green) and a vest with various pockets for storing items. Around her neck she wears a simple charm necklace, the actual charm being in the shape of a crescent moon. Her shirt has been cut, exposing her midsection, abs, and belly. Around her dark pants she wears a leather belt, a simple knife sheathed at its side, and on her feet she has a pair of dark combat boots.

Personality: While she is strong of will and fiercely loyal, Kitty has stared death in the face more than once. Despite her ruggedness, she has a much softer side and dreams of the day when she can put down her weapons and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Bio: She was born into a poor family on the island of Piria; her father was a seafaring merchant that loved to travel, but was unfortunately lost out to sea after a very fateful voyage. As hard as her mother tried, she could not provide for her only daughter and passed away from ill health and heartbreak, leaving Kitty an orphan. This all happened when she was 7 years old, and since then she has been living alone, moving from place to place and collecting anything and everything she could to survive. There were no organized orphanages so if one found themselves without a family or friends it was very unlikely they would survive. Kitty, however, was fiercely determined to never give up and over the years she grew up into a strong and beautiful woman.

A golden opportunity arose when she was offered a spot in the military service of the Lord Patterson, and she quickly enlisted; the prospect of food, water, clothing, shelter too good to pass up. However, as time would go on she began to notice that life under her Lord was not what it seemed. The people were harshly oppressed, often times arrested and executed for the smallest of crimes (such as speaking out against the government). She, and several other army officers, would leave the ranks of the military and started a campaign to bring down the current regime.

She is currently the leader of the freedom fighters, known as the Gryphon Riders.

Nicholas Lawler

Sgt. Nicholas Lawler
Age: 29
Height: 6’3”
Weight 225 lbs
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Green

Nicholas Lawler, jokingly called Brute by those who know him for his lack of tact and guile in his speech or actions, had been in the service of Lord Patterson since he became eligible for enlistment when he turned 16.

Being deployed as one of the front line shock troops used to flush the enemy from entrenched positions eventually took its toll on Nicholas. Watching his comrades die day in and day out on missions with little or no strategic value wore down the fire in his eyes. During one mission where his unit was set to siege a heavily fortified bunker guarding a suspected communications area, his childhood friend was nearly sawed in half by the barrage of rifle bullets and died in Nicholas’ arms. It was then that he decided he had seen enough of the mindless killing and walked from the battlefield.

He left the ranks, becoming a marked deserter in the process. He drifted from town to town for nearly a year, never finding the solace of military brotherhood he had become accustomed to before finding the Gryphon Riders.

Standing slightly above average height, the well-built Nicholas’ most noticeable feature are his dark, nearly Jade-colored eyes framed by his close-cropped blonde hair. Years of fighting have taken a toll on his body, and he bears several scars on his chest and arms which he keeps hidden under his deep green fatigues.

Nicholas now serves as a Sergeant in the Gryphon Riders. Even when combat is not predicted for the day, he is rarely found without his trench gun, a 12-guage pump-action shotgun with bayonet attachment, slung across his back. He also often carries a six-shot .45-caliber pistol on his belt.

Hope this is what you're looking for...

More information has been added in regards to the continents and specified islands. I will edit now and then when I feel the need, but for the most part it is fairly complete.

Capt. Kirin Watanabe
Age:27ish
Hair:Black
Eyes:Green
Weight:120 lbs
Height:5'9"

Kirin is of orient descent. She is slim of athletic build with 34C breasts and the body to go with it. She carries a tanto tied to each leg along with a SIG SG550-1 which is unseperable from her. She wears her hair pulled back in a ponytail, usually wearing camo pants with a purple tank top.

Lord Patterson had forced her men to die for the last time. The years of constant drudgery had beaten her down. Her recon unit, seemed to be less recon and more suicide missions. She had lost most of her unit to assinine missions. She knew at this rate, it would be only a matter of time before there were none left. Kitty, was thinking of leaving to form an elite group of fighters, "The Gryphon Riders" She had asked Kirin if she would come with her, but Kirin was hesitant at first. It seemed they were doing well as a unit, but lately that wasnt the case. She was emotionally beat down, the stress and defeat of watching her unit die through her sniper scope was getting to her. Was this what she had signed up for?
____________________________________________________________

They waited outside the depot, it was suppose to be a quick mission. Take out the two guards and bring fuel back to the camp. She waited above the depot watching the two guards, nothing special was happening, she called her unit to take action. They moved in to take out the two guards with no problem, then three barrack doors opened. The rest was a nightmare. Her unit was gunned down as she methodically took out the riflemen. She couldnt fire the rifle fast enough with accurate shots. They were gone. All of them, in one fight. Was it a trap? Was it bad intelligence? She never knew the answer. That night she disappeared, stealthly into the night. She vanished for months with no word, all thought she had been taken by the guerillas at the depot. She was part of the desperate and the broken hearted.

That night she showed up in Kittys camp. Reporting for duty. The madness had to stop, and it had to stop sooner than later.

Hope this is ok, let me know.

Well, the actual thread was supposed to be by invitation, but I'm going to roll with this one and accept your character cause you have a good head on your shoulders ^_^

A few things need a little clarification, though:

1) What is the SIG SG550-1? (I'm assuming it's a sword but if not then you'll need to explain a bit more about it)

2) This thread doesn't take place in our own Earth, so I'm not sure what ethnicity you had in mind by Oriental but as it stands there are no Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc in this story. I still have yet to describe the remaining nations, so I'm not going to make you change the ethnicity of your character.

The Honourable Alexandra Trent, Lady Summersby
Age: 24

Lady Summersby's family belongs to the highest echelons of Lord Patterson's aristocratic regime on Continent C. Her father, Allan Trent, 1 Earl of Summersby was instrumental in building the armed forces of Lord Patterson, her older brother Ciaran, serves a colonel with one of the regiments, and her uncle is a member of the diplomatic corps.

Alexandra received the compulsory military training as a lancer with His Lordship's own Cavalry and left the service as a captain. She then ventured into the diplomatic service and is now one of the main liasons between the civil authorities and the military.

She's an avid supporter or the regime of Lord Patterson's. Seeing as the common ruck do not posses the necessary faculty to govern themselves. Democracy is not to be encouraged since providence have created the Peerage and thus chosen them to lead. Even in the authoritarian society of Lord Patterson's Commonwealth, Lady Summersby belongs to the more extreme faction as she argues that there is no point in educating even a fraction of the commoners given that they are only suited for menial labour, or serving as enlisted men in the armed forces.

***********************************

"The reports are most vexng my lady"

The clerk had spoken softly as he pushed a sheaf of papers onto Alexandra's desk. "It seems we might have a rebellion on our hands"

She gave him an icy stare in response to his outspokenness.

"Don't be stupid. A band of vagabonds does not constitute a rebellion, and anyhow the army is being put on their heels. It's only a matter of time before they are being hunted down like mad dogs. Now can we move on to more important things perhaps?"

Lady Summersby rapped the polished surface of her desk as she looked at the arrayed clerks that made up her staff. Waiting impatiently to hear the news.

I love it, Lady_M :)

There is an IC thread up if you want to start there, though the thread will be very slow in the upstart while I piece together players and roles, setting, etc.

3) Since this thread takes place in a setting like to the late 18th/early 19th century there are no sniper rifles so that part will most likely have to be edited out.

Well there were rifles. Like the Mauser, or the 1903 Springfield. They had almost a half kilometre of range (Effective range anyway).

That could in theory be a sniper rifle, It's what was used as a sniper rifle all the way till korea.

Still not a great weapon but a period equivalent to a sniper rifle.

Now see, if I had that sort of knowledge I might have been a bit more prepared >_<

Anyways, those of you who have set characters can post in the IC thread, linked in my signature. I have to go to work soon and won't get back till 7pm(ish) EST.

Also, I have further updated information regarding the land masses. If you need to edit character bio's please do so accordingly. If you have any suggestions or comments please let me know ^_^

On to this little pickle now. The SIG SG 550-1 is a modern day Sniper rifle, and also a carbine asault rifle.

Dependent on makes and years produced, I think the Sniper or -1 version holds 5-30 bullets. And it's effective range is actually only around 600 m. But the styling of the weapon is wrong for the time.

Due to it's much newer contruction and the automatic firing, the weapon can empty it's chamber even of 30 bullets in around a second. Considering the Springfield could only hold 8 and even that was a heroic feat back then, the SIG SG 500 is a little overpowered.

Though the 1903 Springfield is a fair equivalent of weaponry at the time used for sniping. Is that possibly something fair for both?

Ok well I'll allow more primitive versions of sniper rifles. But yeah... nothing like the SIG thing.

And I stress primitive.

Politics and fashion

Probably due to selective perception I mis-read the equivalent period in which the thread is taking place thus giving Alexandra Trent an air of late 18 early 19 C. I could change this if it's too much of a bother.

Further I'm interested in knowing the political systems of the other countries of this particular world in order to formulate a policy for Lord Protector Patterson's Government.

(Further; Am I wrong in assuming that the technology would be a blend between early 20:th C and the kind from Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series)

Well the time frame is late 19th/early 20th style. So you don't need to really change anything

And while most of the geographical information has been posted, I still have yet to put a lot of detail into political structures, trade agreements, disputes between nations, etc. But it'll be up at some point. If you have any suggestions then let me know cause any help would be awesome ^_^

Politics

I suppose that one could base at least one of the islands of the Federation on Early Modern Netherlands. A merchant republic although one with a reasonably strong army and navy to protect it's business interests.

If we are talking 18th/early 19th style then the weaponry would be muzzle loaded muskets/rifles and pistols. Hence the sniper equivalent would be the Baker Rifle. (Thank you Bernard Cornwell for "Sharpe"). Cumbersome to load but accurate over long distances.

The aristocratic societies have survived and would most likely continue to pursue traditions like those of earlier centuries, so it's kind of a carry over. 18th century style traditions in a early 20th century world.

For future references... take some time to rest after work before attempting to set up an intricate story line

*falls down exhausted*

(And don't try and post when you've had a lot of whisky)

Now a drink I could definitely use.

Thanks for the quick catch

Your most welcome

So are we in agreement about the weaponry then? No breechloaders, if one does not, like Matthew Hervey has a very skilled artisan to craft one for you.

Weapons I'll take on a case-by-case basis, but for a good rule of thumb to go by is there aren't any AK-47's or any like technology. Rifles, six-shooters, duck hunting guns and the like are perfectly fine.
