I have written a 50,000 word story. The genre is fantasy and it deals with the love and attraction between two women. The sex scenes are quite graphical. Now I need to figure out what to do next.

Should I try to send to a publisher? Are there markets for lesbian erotica in the fantasy genre? I live in Finland so there's quite a long way to the US if I want my book published there (the book is written in English).

If I want it published, I also need to figure out how graphical the sex scenes should be. Of course there's lots of rewriting to be done. If publishing turns out to be a bad idea, I have thought about putting it on the web for all to read.

I don't know what to do yet. Any advice?

Good morning, sami. Welcome to the AH.

"Graphical" (to me) implies illustration. I think you mean "graphic" ... as in "explicit," no?

Anyway, check out the Erotic Readers & Writers Association at www.erotica-readers.com for publishing resources.

As for advice ... that's difficult to give without some sample of your work. I would consider submitting work to be published on Lit in order to get some feedback.

Good luck to you!

We have a couple of Black Lace novels that are good sword & sorcery fantasy & include lesbian sex, so it might be worthwhile giving them a try. Not sure what their policy on submissions is though, but I'm sure the link impressive gave would help you there. I'm pretty sure Black Lace are a British company, so that wouldn't be so far to send stuff ;)

lesbians in fantasy

It is certainly not unknown to have lesbian or gay relationships in fantasy novels. The biggest example that comes to mind offhand is Mercedes Lackey's work who has had several novels with gay men as their heroes. That said, those are not graphic at all. The romance in them is just that - romance, not erotica. My guess is that you won't have as big of a deal with the fact that you have lesbians as with the nature of the sex scenes. As always, it depends on who your audience is. If you want to be read by the teen market, you are gonna have to tone them way down I would guess. If you want to forget that market, then that's OK, but it will limit who will buy your book and therefore perhaps how interested a publisher would be in it.
