Lenny Bruce

Dixon's new av got me thinking again about the man, who certainly deserves to be remembered today. This thread is not a political thread, but a tribute to Lenny's life and work. (Of course, both did have political ramifications, so it will be partly political.) For starters, here's a website which has a lot of information on Bruce:

"I learned the truth from Lenny Bruce."

Yes he was a junkie. Yes paranoid and obsessive at the end. But he did speak a lot of truth and he was damn funny in the process.

His two most famous books, How to Talk Dirty and Influence People and The Essential Lenny Bruce are wonderfully funny and eye-opening reads, IMHO.

A few choice quotes:


"You can do anything with the body that God made, and then you want to get definitive and tell me of the parts He made; I don't see that anywhere in any reference to any Bible. Yeah. he made it all; it's all clean or all dirty."

All my humor is based upon destruction and despair. If the whole world were tranquil, without disease and violence, I'd be standing on the breadline right in back of J. Edgar Hoover.
