I've gotten a couple of emails from them. I was interested until I found out their pay scale, now I'm still trying to decide...

On the matter of our pay scale. The majority of publishers offer anywhere from 30 to 45% of sales when they contract an unpublished story. They would also consider stories posted on Literotica to already be “published.” To contract a story with them, the author would most likely be required to do a major revamp and massively add to the word count of a story already posted on Literotica. And the author would have to take the story down from Literotica.

ED is not an epublisher on the same level as Ellora‘s Cave, Samhain, Loose Id, Phaze, or Torquere. We publish an online magazine and print magazine. We don’t offer percentages. The stories that we put in on our online magazine make no profits to offer a percentage of. They are free to read to our readers. When we contract a story from a Literotica author, we don’t require any additional rewrites or adding any words to the story. I’ve already read the story and like it as is. And in the majority of cases, we don’t require the author to pull the story from Literotica.

Even in the cases of our exclusive contracts, we still accept the story as is and don’t make the author rewrite anything. It is still payment for a story that is already “published”. There aren’t too many publishers out there that will do that.

Basically, we offer payment for a story that is already considered “published” by major publishers, don’t make the author pull it, and accept it as is. We do do edits. But those only pertain to punctuation, spelling and grammar, we don’t ask the author to massively rewrite it. It doesn’t matter to us that the story is already published, we believe our readers will enjoy reading it.

Not that I am interested, but this is just my personal opinion. I would consider it an insult to take 20.00 for a story that I might have 15 or 20 hours worth of work in. I'd just as soon give it away for nothing.

If we were a full-fledged epublisher, we'd be able to offer more. However, as authors ourselves (and my editing for one of my publishers), we don't have the time/money to turn ED into a publisher.

We created a payscale that's comparable to what one of my publishers paid for stories of 10-15k (before they switched to royalties for that line).

If someone doesn't wish for us to publish their story, then that's fine. We have a steadily growing readership, and it's great publicity for all involved.

Personally, I'd rather get *something* out of a story, but I too have works out there for free: on my website, on Lit, on Sticky Pen, with Forbidden Fruit ezine, with ED, with Clean Sheets, and with Logical Lust.

So, bottom line, it's a personal decision, and while we can't pay a lot, we'd like to pay *something* for the wonderful stories we have.

With all due respect, what I consider an insult is throwing this holier-than-thou attitude back in the face of someone who's trying to give you something for nothing. Your work is already available for free. Who the fuck do you think you are to criticize someone who simply wants to give it a broader audience AND pay you in the process?

No worries. I love writing. I can't imagine doing anything else. And for me, it's therapy as well, on a lot of issues. Besides, I've made some wonderful friends through my publishers and such. And honestly, one of my favorite things about writing is getting to know my readers.

God, yes. I know I've felt that way with some of the things I've read. I can only hope that I've evoked such things in someone else.
