I live in ****** and I need a criminal defense attorney ASAP.

The problem is, I have no money up front and I will have to make payments. It doesn't matter what this eventually costs, I'm desperate.

Can anyone help me, please?

You say criminal minx. How about the Public Defender's Office? Or check the yellow pages online or on paper under "Legal Aid"

Only helpful thoughts

They all I can offer from this side of the pond.

If you want to sound off - PM me.

Patricia and Jammies have already suggested the most viable sources. I just have to add the (probably blatantly obvious) advice to take the right to remain silent very seriously. Don't answer any question other than confirming your identity; don't participate in seeming small talk; above all, don't fall for the "you're entitled to an attorney but if you go that route we won't be able to help you" con-game. The right answer to absolutely everything is "where's my lawyer?"

and do not, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, take or let anyone you know take a polygraph (lie detector) test.

And you DO NOT have let them in without a warrant, no matter WHAT they say.

I would suggest that you look in the telephone directory for "ladies legal," "women's legal" or some such. Many cities have such an organization. Also, I believe that the University of Kentucky is in Lexington. It might be that someone from a relevant study area might be able to help.

Thanks, Colly. Out of all the avenues I was given to explore, this one was the most helpful. I did find a resonably priced attorney, unfortunately he wants $1000 for a retainer. On the bright side, $1000 is 1/2 to 1/10 of what other attorneys wanted. I gave him the details of the case and he answered my questions. His advice was to wait for the arraignment date, which is June 20th, and push for a public defender. At that time, if a PD is denied, get back in touch with him and he'll take the case. He would take it today, if I had the money, but I don't. He told me that I have about 8 weeks before anything really happens, so I shouldn't worry, and I'll have time to get the money together. How I don't know yet.

Thank you, everyone, for the help, the solid advice and the support. I have zero experience in this area.

I'm learning SO much about our wonderful (not) legal system.

I did find out that since the case is in Anderson County, there isn't much help available. UK legal clinic and Legal aid couldn't help me.

(PS. The defense isn't for me, but for someone close to me. I'm sorry I didn't clarify that. I was in something of a panic. Feeling better now.)

So glad the pressure's eased up a bit, hon. *hugs*

Wish it would ease up all together... can ya wave a magic wand and make the case be dismissed, Jams? *hugs* back atcha

I wish! :( Got some friends on the other end of a case, where the whole thing was dismissed 'cos the judge didn't believe the word of an abused child. *sigh* Our legal system sucks some times, but it really is better than the alternatives.

I agree with you, it sucks, but... wait, what alternatives?

It is a sad day when one truthful child is disbelieved and the abuser is set free and a dishonest child is believed and an innocent person has their life ruined because of it.

What a legal system, what a society. The question becomes, is there really anything we can do to change it?

I'm sorry for your friends' misfortune and I'm sorry for the child. That's one of many judges I'd like to smack in the back of the head.

Guilty until proven innocent
Kill 'em all and let the afterlife sort 'em out
Anarchy

Sadly, none of the alternatives work even a tenth as well as our imperfect system.

Guilty until proven innocent runs rampant, unfortunately.

Yeah, you're right, Kill 'em all and anarchy just don't cut it. LOL.

I had a total brain freeze and just could not come up with an alternative to our not-so-wonderful system. Thanks for the thaw!

"Hang 'em high" and "boys will be boys" don't work neither, huh? :D

Our legal system will work perfectly the day we have a perfect lie detector.

Even then we'll have problems with people who don't know they're lying, like psychopaths. Or people who don't care, like sociopaths.

I'm glad to hear things are getting a bit better though, minx. *HUGS*
