(CNSNews.com) – Statistics compiled over the past decade show that the number of abortions in the United States has dropped precipitously since the early 1980s, but the procedure still remains a prevalent form of birth control in this country and around the world.

According to the U.S .Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, there were 846,181 abortions in the U.S. in 2006, the latest year for which government records are available.

The pro-abortion rights Alan Guttmacher Institute reports that there have been nearly 50 million abortions performed since 1973, the year the Supreme Court issued the Roe v. Wade decision ushering in legal abortion nationwide.

In 2008, Guttmacher says, there were 1.2 million “legally terminated pregnancies” in the United States, based on reports complied from state and local health agencies — down from 1.3 million the year previous.

According to Guttmacher, 35 percent of all U.S. women will have had an abortion by age 45.

Guttmacher also reports that 93 percent of all abortions occur for “social reasons” such as a mother’s decision that the child is unwanted or “inconvenient.”

What we need to add in are the HUGE number of babies born into this world that cannot be cared for properly due to economic, psychiatric (including physical and sexual abuse) problems. It's very easy to say the world would be a better place without abortion if you make the unwarranted assumption that ALL those would-be babies would be raised in a happy, productive, caring environments.
Seems to me it would make more sense to hold that position after we solve the problem of loving, feeding, nurturing and education those babies that ARE carried to term.
Then there is also the problem of how it becomes incumbent on some folks to decide for the rest of the world what constitutes acceptable (read "sinless") behavior.

I'm on the fence here. In my opinion abortion is used too readily these days but my opinion doesn't count for a hill of beans. Anything over 12 weeks makes my hackles go up. A woman has a right to her decide the choice for her own body - to a point; then we are talking a child's right also.

me too, but 12 weeks is only an option if you have low cost on-demand abortion.

If I were in control (ha!) there would be freely available on-demand abortion up to 16 weeks and thereafter ONLY in case of threat to maternal health. Backed up with comprehensive sex education and birth control you could completely eradicate the need for abortion.

I'm not a fan of abortion either, but I think that trying to establish with the State's interest in this situation is hard. I think that there is a problem where prosecutors can charge someone for murder in the death of an unborn fetus, but there is no death certificate when a woman miscarries.

no, my point is, is that not all women are even aware. my friend was over four months gone before she realised. I was about 10 weeks pregnant before I knew because like my friend, I had breakthrough bleeding the first time. so unless you want free pregnancy testing available to every woman to use every time she has sex, then 12 weeks cut off would be lovely, but 1)it's unworkable and 2) if you are going to abort, what is the material difference between 12 and 16 weeks?
