As a South Asian, I find it surprising that left-wing groups align with Islamist movements. As a liberal in my country, I am Atheist. For me 'Left-wing Islamist' is an oxymoron as left-wing politics advocates for secularism and separation of religion from state affairs, while Islamist movements seek to integrate religious principles into governance.
Can someone clarify this from a western perspective?

Paging Carlos the Jackal. :ROFLMAO:

Socialism and communism hasn't historically done too badly in Islamic Societies. The PLO was very much a Marxist organization, for example. Indonesia and Malaysia both had large communist parties at one time (before both were brutally suppressed with CIA backing).

I always found it odd that religion and politics somehow coalesced in any capacity. That's probably because I've been non religious most of my life even though I was raised catholic.
