Just stumbled over a list of the ten least liked baby names in the US...

Girls:

Nevaeh ("Heaven" spelled backward and one of the most divisive names around, according to Wattenberg.)
Destiny (People dislike names that confer a virtue onto a child, Wattenberg said — and many felt associated this name with exotic dancers.)
Madison
Mackenzie
McKenna
Addison (An example of a masculine named turned feminine, which many people dislike, Wattenberg said)
Gertrude (People said this name is "ugly.")
Kaitlyn (For its "made-up" spelling.)
Makayla
Bertha
Hope

Boys:

Jayden
Brayden
Aiden
Kaden (These rhyming names struck many as overdone, Wattenberg reported.)
Hunter (Too much like a last name or "too violent.")
Hayden
Bentley (People dislike brand-name names, Wattenberg found, calling them "trashy")
Tristan
Michael (Too boring, according to some.)
Jackson

I don't know if I agree. I mean, whats wrong with Madison? Or Michael? I know a few of those. But if anybody needs inspiration for naming the antagonist of a story, here you go...

All I can say is that I only feel a visceral hatred of the names

Gertrude, Bertha, Brayden and Bentley.

Gertrude and Bertha just feel like old-people names. I would seriously have problems trying to imagine a Gertrude or a Bertha under the age of ninety-three.

Bentley is a car, not a name.

And Brayden??? Fucking Brayden? It hurts my brain to read that name. I keep drawing out the first syllable into a BRAAAAYYYden. It's like a donkey in my temporal lobes.

Jayden
Brayden
Aiden
Kaden
Hayden

What? Any name ending in "den".

Now I have know a number of...

Madison
Mackenzie
McKenna
Addison
Hope

Each was a unique and wonderful person.

Gertrude and Bertha just feel like old-people names..

I believe they're classic German. So maybe if you write an erotic story with a Wagner theme.

"Gertrude's ample bosom quivered and her thick braids dangled all over the place as Sigfried plunged his steely wurst all the way inside. She didn't know how long he'd last, but she wasn't about to start singing any time soon..."

Glad none of my kids' names are on that list!

In our family we deliberately picked some of the least popular names back in the day.

You can't know what the naming fashion looks like ten years into the future anyway, and it's annoying to carry one of the popular names in your generation. I've tried it - when I started school there were two other boys in my class with the same first name as me.

That being said I'm happy that we eluded Brayden and Bertha... :)

Todd belongs on that list. It doesn't carry across a room and is easily confused with other names.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

pro. A+

I've only met two guys who were named Todd. Both were huge jerks. Coincidence????

As for the names on the list, I agree with C2BK that Gertrude and Bertha are way too old-fashioned to be good names. A couple others are kind of weird (Nevaeh? Jayden for a boy?). But I really don't get the hate for most of them, to be honest.

I work with a woman who has the unfortunate name of Esmeralda. Her last name(which I obviously cannot give) is almost as bad.

Thing is? She is drop dead gorgeous! makes the name even more out of place.

Esmeralda means "Emerald" and as such is the epitome of glorious burning beauty. At least, to me-- your mileage obviously varies. :D

My current girlfriend's name is Nora, and I think it suits her. She is what we like to call "High Femme" and damn, yeah.

Jayden seems to be a fairly common name among the West Coast queer set, and as such, makes me think of nothing but good stuff...

Thing about names, is they become defined by the people who carry them.

North, it's a fucking direction. just saying.

Bad enough having one of the biggest tools in the world as your dad, you get a bad name as well.

By the way, are the rest of the corps on lit with you, or are you flying solo;)

I just think that it's funny that 4 of the names on here are names of someone's kids that I know(all the same person). Guess everyone else doesn't agree with her naming tastes.

I see a lot of different names in my job. Today, I saw Princewill for a first name. Not sure what the nickname would be, or if it was a male or female.

What is wrong with parents?

I once worked with a lady named, Amaryllis and I wondered what was wrong with her parents, too. But, she was a beautiful woman and we all called her Lily.

Personally, I like being called, Babs, but that goes against the thread.

I don't see what's wrong with Amaryllis, either.

There are a lot of choices people make in life that I have strong opinions about-- the things that affect other folks around them. Names, not so much.

I've seen some terrible names. Things like Clemateria and such. I think this kind of name sets people up to not be taken seriously. Where I work, I see weird names all day and sometimes I feel like parents are kind of cruel. They name their kids because they think it would be cute, but don't really give much thought to how it will look when they're adults.

Girls:
Nevaeh ("Heaven" spelled backward)
Huh? Okay, first off, how do you pronounce it? Second, if you're spelling it backwards, doesn't that kinda negate it? Like all those bad movies where devil sorts speak latin backwards? Why not just name the girl "Heaven..."

Um. On second thought, I think I answered my own question. Talk about a stripper name "Gentlemen, give it up for...Heaven!"
Madison
Mackenzie
McKenna
I've no problem with these, myself. Funny, I remember when "Splash" came out and the name "Madison" became the most poplar girl's name around.

As for Gertrude—I always think Gertrude Stein. And so have no problem with it.
I think that's the only name I can't see redeeming. It just doesn't sound nice.
Hunter (Too much like a last name or "too violent.")
Seriously? They don't like Hunter because it's "too violent"? These people do know that their cats and dogs are "hunters" right?

I think Thorn should be on the list as too Bold and Beautiful pompadourish.

I can't see anyone ever again naming their son Chauncey, unless there's some inheritance hanging on the use of the name.

My sister teaches a nursery class and I look forward to the annual sharing of questionable names: there's usually one named after some football celebrity, along with Blaze and Blade.

To be fair my son's middle name is what our dog is called: not a real name.

I work with a woman who has the unfortunate name of Esmeralda. Her last name(which I obviously cannot give) is almost as bad.

Thing is? She is drop dead gorgeous! makes the name even more out of place.

The only esmerelda I grew up with was the Disney Esmerelda, so I always associated it with unbelievable sexiness, exoticness, and gypsies. In that order.

I see a lot of different names in my job. Today, I saw Princewill for a first name. Not sure what the nickname would be, or if it was a male or female.

I love Amaryllis! But there is a good lesson there.

If you want to name your kid something that's a little out of left field, make sure you can shorten it.

Maximillion----Max
Amaryllis----Lilly
Addelaide---Addie
Leopold--Leo

etc.

What's in a name

There's always more. Apparently the list was culled from bulletin boards which perhaps says more about the people who post.
Michael? It's biblical isn't it?
Glad Lilly isn't on the list.
I love Madison as a girl's name...sounds hot
