My numbers are about a quarter of those, but they're enough to support my view that I should just keep doing what I'm doing and not pay too much attention to nasty critics.

I honestly write stories of the kind I know I'd enjoy as a reader. I've been reading erotics stories here, and to a lesser extent on other sites, for over 20 years, and I have a pretty good idea what I like. If the stories involve certain stereotypes, so be it.

I'd say this about the stereotype issue, however: having written stories here for over eight years, I'm more attentive now to trying to tweak the stereotypes to make them fresh or give them a veneer of plausibility.

The last few years everything I write goes for sale. Once a story has been in the market for a while and sales are slow I'll drop one on here. There are some that will never be here simply because some things that work for sale wouldn't go over great here because of how they're a mix of genres and no matter where I put it here, some would trash it.

Which sterotypes do you find yourself writing all too often?

I've written about three hookers (including a series about one) and I've tried to humanize them. But they don't have any illusions about what they are doing. They usually speak in terms of business and marketing metaphors, not sexual ones. One of them chides a customer who wants a "freebie" after the main session is over.

"Josh, I'm running a business here. Like, you wouldn't expect to get a free drill set from Sears." Sears just happened to pop into my mind at that moment. . . . "Just to be clear, you hired me to blow you. I'm not your lover, or girlfriend, or even a friend with benefits. If you see me downstairs, don't come near me unless you are ready to pay me again for something else."

I will admit to having a Manic Pixie Dream Girl in a Mature story series I'm writing right now. I'm doing my best to make her a real character with depth but I wouldn't be surprised if my meager audience of readers would prefer she remain a caricature to get my gruff older gentleman out of his comfort zone and in general continue to just be the reason to intiating sexy times.

I honestly recoil a bit from the acceptance of the term "lazy stereotype," because stereotypes are not in and of themselves lazy. There's often some truth in them, and they have always been useful in fiction, even what we think of as "good" or "literary" fiction. I think with even modest effort you can breathe enough life in a "lazy" character to move him or her into the "non-lazy" category.

I agree there, stereotypes are not in themselves lazy. Characters perceived to be stereotypes sometimes occur frequently for the simple reason that they work. And while a character can be perceived to be a stereotype, writers can add more depth to them to make them interesting or an inversion.

For example in my story 'Sexy Savannah From Number 9' Savannah herself would fit into the 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl' stereotype others have noted, the main male character Dino is a stereotypical slacker while Dino's strict Italian father Salvatore is a stereotypical authoritarian father. But in writing the story I added more depth to Savannah, making her a no-nonsense young woman who puts Dino on the straight and narrow, and who recalls her unhappy childhood and teenage years when she was bullied for having scoliosis and wearing a back brace. As for Dino, I made him an unsympathetic character despite being the story's main protagonist - things go wrong for him time and time again - but you don't feel sorry for him. And the father I made a Large Ham, chewing the scenery as he shouts nearly every line of dialogue he has in the story and frequently punishes Dino for his many failings.

I've considered writing something that goes behind the scenes at a standard rom-com, in which the focal point is a beautiful young single urban woman. But the woman, and the men who might be considering dating her, aren't the drama. That's between the Sassy Black Woman and the Flamboyant Gay Guy, who seek to be the young (obviously white cishet Anglo) woman's Giver Of Relationship Advice. Tension mounts between S.B.W. and F.G.G., to the point that each tries to get a hit man to take out the other. Hilarity ensues when they hire the same hit man, but he can't schedule either of them for several months. Meanwhile, each shouts contradictory, mutually-exclusive relationship advice at the young (o.w.c.A.) woman, who screams back, telling them to get a room. Which they do.

Yeah, I know, everybody's already written that one.

A "lazy sterotype" the way I use the term is the equivalent of an NPC in a video game. NPS's have simple, predictable "algorithms" -- they say and do what everybody expects them to say and do. And, to reiterate, there's nothing wrong with using them in stories -- for side-characters.

I can't think of any fiction I've read which has more than a couple of characters, that does not have a few hastily sketched side-characters. They're very useful for story-telling.

And "lazy sterotyping" is what people do in real life, I think. When I meet someone for the first time, I can't help pigeon-holing them. It's only when I get to know someone better, that they stop being a "typical leftie student" or "single mom devoted to preventing her daughter make the same mistakes she did", or "nerdy cosplaying goth".

But later they apologized, just said the story pissed them off and asked would I mind if he rewrote the ending and published it. I said, sure, not a problem. So he did, but the thing is, this was a mother son story and in his ending, the son turns down sex with the mother. Let's say, it did not go over well with the readers because they want incest in an incest story.

What do the people in written and video BNWO want? Its not "nicer characters who act like good people"

You have a valid point, and I don't believe the first will hurt their feelings. The second one they will love, because I'm playing into the stereotypes in that one. The dystopian future is a kind of survival of the fittest and best prepared tale. But the leader of group has fallen for his BS for sometimes and not only sees himself as an emissary and profit of God, but as a god, albeit he thinks he's a little higher than the angels and only just under God himself. Because power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely is more than a saying, and the main reason dictatorships and emperors' reigns generally end very, very, extremely badly. How many of the Emperors of Roman's deaths were from natural causes. Not many, and many of those may have been poisoned.

And while my bio says I'm interested in BNWO that isn't entirely true. I'm interested in becoming more fully fulfilled and have a stronger voice and influence in America. I'm interested in less blacks behind bars, especially those wrongfully convicted. I want fewer black killing blacks or anyone else, and for the cops to stop killing black folk for any reason (or no reason).

That is what my blog and writing out the great real world is about. But this is more for fun, but if I can interject my own hopes into stories for people to read, and hopefully think more about, that'll be great as well.
