I remember reading about a man who posted private information about a woman on an internet bulletin board and was sued for invasion of privacy and stalking and such. (We had also discussed it in one of my many legal ethics and issues classes.)

Does anyone remember this case and the details of the outcome? If I remember correctly, he got around 6 years in jail.

Anyone remember? Any details? Possible links to the story or cut-n-pasted info?

Thanks.

(Sorry for that excessively long first sentence. At 6:30 in the morning with a blond head at the typewriter, it is difficult to be as expressive as I wish. Time to do the morning workout. <groan>)

Is there really no one on this board that remembers this case? If you do, please speak up.

Thanks.

Like a lot of people I heard about the case but never the out come....sorry.
BTW I think most people here are not posting on this thread because they really don't know and don't want to waste your time.....(Grins)....unlike me.....Oh just thought about this and the person mst likely to know about this is Laurel or Manu, after all it could have a real bearing on them so they might know about it.....just a thought.

To be quite honest, you may want to check with Siren. She's a little more familiar with court cases. I've heard of it myself but I'm not sure where you would find that information, other a search engine (i.e., Alta Vista, Iwon, Lycos, etc.). To expose someone's life or lifestyle on the internet is definately invasion of that person's property. I'm surprised that she only sued him and didn't get a crack off of his ass first.

If I remember correctly (and it would not be a surprize if I am getting this mixed up), the woman was assaulted due to her personal information being available. It was spread throughout many bulletin boards over a length of time.
I believe this was the first legal case involving personal privacy and the internet.

Of course, the last legal ethics class I took was in '96 and I have only had one refresher since then--that was spurred by my employer by a court case that brought another hospital system to its knees.
(My job is relatively law-suit risk-free, as far as healthcare jobs go. One of the reasons I like my job. Nobody else puts my liscense on the line!)

Isn't this the case where the woman in question was a terrible troll?
