Lawmaker vows to stop ‘Confederate cleansing’ and ‘cultural terrorism’ in Georgia

Odd fact about the carving at Stone Mountain:

The entire carving is out of the side of the mountain, with the exception of Jefferson Davis' hat. His hat is poured concrete.

Why? Originally he was carved holding a Confederate military cap. Since he never served in the Confederate army, historians complained. So they dynamited his military hat off the carving and replaced it was a historically accurate "Gentleman's hat" of the time via poured concrete.

Their cause, of course, being the right to treat black people like farm animals.

The Confederate battle flag is a banner of treason.

Slavers are the scum of the Earth.

Burn them.

When you ask people who claim the Confederate legacy and what their forefather fought for, they will tell you, proudly, it was about states rights.

When you then ask them what state right they are talking about, they will give you every answer OTHER than slavery despite that being the key reason for the war.

At least if they would be honest about it I think some people would grudgingly accept their claims about the Confederacy, but by continuing to deny the obvious they undermine their contentions.

Actually, they were fighting AGAINST states rights. They objected to Northern States not enforcing escaped slave legislation.

People learn from the past and this trend of wanting to erase every trace of racism in this countries past is going to lead to the feeling it never happened-which is what the white guilt driven idiots doing it want- but the downside is how do you learn to avoid wrong when there's no examples left

Slavery was wrong, its terrible and this country was part of it and is no longer, but we can't pretend it didn't happen.

And we're going to lose out on a lot of books and culture if we continue to wipe out and ban anything book that had a racist character or mentions it.

Ignorance is bliss isn't an answer.

You can remember history without celebrating traitors and other villains, can't you?

Does Norway have giant statues of Quisling everywhere?

Worse, the soul cleansing makes everyone and every generation a prospective villain when the politics support your persecution by the PC mob. What we got are old world pogroms such as Poles and Russians committed against Jews. PC is the same business.

Actually, they were fighting AGAINST states rights. They objected to Northern States not enforcing escaped slave legislation.

How is that not a state right? The states were choosing not to enforce the legislation. Exactly how John C. Calhoun envisioned states rights to be. What they wanted is the same thing drug users want: the ability to do whatever they want without interference from the government, right up to the moment they need to be protected from their own doing when suddenly they need the government.

In this case, the South didn't think the federal government should have as much power as it did EXCEPT when it came to the return of runaway slaves. Then suddenly they were all for the power of the federal government.

The South wanted more state rights, the ability to decide for themselves, rather than have the federal government decide for them. What they really wanted, but didn't recognize it at the time, was a return to the first attempt at government this country had which was the Articles of Confederation.

As the Confederacy found out, a loose assembly of states all doing their own thing is no way to run a country.

That's exactly what I'm saying, the South's "we were fighting for states rights" argument is total bollocks.

Yeah, they had not learned from the failure of the first American Confederation.

Meanwhile: William Howard Russell, an Irish reporter with The Times of London, was an early war correspondent. His coverage of the Crimean War toppled a British government. In 1861 he came to the USA and covered, first the buildup to the War of Southern Treason, then the war itself. He reported meeting with South Carolina's secessionist leaders not long before the traitors fired the first salvos.

What did those secession leaders want? They wanted a return to royalty, a return to being subjects of the British monarch, with an exemption (based on the South's production of cotton and tobacco) to retain slavery.

They wanted to be colonials again. They wanted treason.

Southern leadership were mostly Federal veterans. Jefferson Davis had been USA Secretary of War. The generals were West Point graduates. All had sworn a solemn oath to protect and defend the Federal system. All broke that solemn oath.

Oath-breakers. Traitors. Slaver scum. THESE were the cream of the Confederacy.

IMHO Lincoln's great failure was insisting that the treasonous leadership NOT be punished for their perfidy. Hanging Davis, Lee, other notables would have sent a strong message: Your treason failed. Don't try it again. Death to traitors.

That message was not sent, and now we have baghead 'militias'. Shit.

Even if there is a tiny shred of respectability in state rights fight argument, the stars and bars is polluted by slavery just as thoroughly as Nazis pollution of ancient symbols such as the squared circle (swastika) and our ancestors writing system (runes/SS).

Another pandering politician callously looking for an extra 1% of vote.

This cannot be stressed enough to the fuckwits of the U.S. who say the Confederate Flag represented "state rights".

The South had no problem with big bad government imposing its will on states, as long as that will was for slavery to continue. Once they saw Northern states were flexing their own state rights and having none of it, the South disavowed the government. "State rights" implies a collective defense of all state rights. Period.

The defense of the Confederate Flag put up by some assholes last year was quite possibly the most shameful demonstration of ignorance this country has seen in years. Morons.

Slavery remained in the USA after the Confederacy went away, the 13th Amendment ended slavery.

Pretty much. Though I'm less than certain that white guilt want to erase history. Seems like you can't have guilt if you forget what happened.

Nah, white guilt folks are fully on (and sometimes driving) the NEVER FORGET train. Which is a good thing IMHO.

Which is funny considering how much southern conservatives LOATHE states rights.

[Father and Son build a LEGO model of the Alabama Capitol Building]

Father: "This is fun!"

Son: "Yeah, it is! Hey dad, what's this part?" [points to Confederate Flag]

Father: "That, son, is the Confederate Flag. It represents when Southern states took
issue with the rest of the nation over slavery. I'm okay if we keep it on the capitol as a historical monument, as long as people clearly demonstrate that they know the history of it, rather than try to leverage it in a modern world where we don't support its ideals."

Son [grabs Confederate Flag, starts waving it around]: "STATE RIGHTS! STATE RIGHTS!"

Father [takes flag]: "Uh oh. That's enough. Guess I'm going to have to keep this in my pocket until you grow up a little more."

Son: "Aw, nuts."
