Their cause, of course, being the right to treat black people like farm animals.
When you ask people who claim the Confederate legacy and what their forefather fought for, they will tell you, proudly, it was about states rights.
When you then ask them what state right they are talking about, they will give you every answer OTHER than slavery despite that being the key reason for the war.
At least if they would be honest about it I think some people would grudgingly accept their claims about the Confederacy, but by continuing to deny the obvious they undermine their contentions.
People learn from the past and this trend of wanting to erase every trace of racism in this countries past is going to lead to the feeling it never happened-which is what the white guilt driven idiots doing it want- but the downside is how do you learn to avoid wrong when there's no examples left
Slavery was wrong, its terrible and this country was part of it and is no longer, but we can't pretend it didn't happen.
And we're going to lose out on a lot of books and culture if we continue to wipe out and ban anything book that had a racist character or mentions it.
Ignorance is bliss isn't an answer.

Actually, they were fighting AGAINST states rights. They objected to Northern States not enforcing escaped slave legislation.
That's exactly what I'm saying, the South's "we were fighting for states rights" argument is total bollocks. How is that not a state right? The states were choosing not to enforce the legislation. Exactly how John C. Calhoun envisioned states rights to be. What they wanted is the same thing drug users want: the ability to do whatever they want without interference from the government, right up to the moment they need to be protected from their own doing when suddenly they need the government.
In this case, the South didn't think the federal government should have as much power as it did EXCEPT when it came to the return of runaway slaves. Then suddenly they were all for the power of the federal government.
The South wanted more state rights, the ability to decide for themselves, rather than have the federal government decide for them. What they really wanted, but didn't recognize it at the time, was a return to the first attempt at government this country had which was the Articles of Confederation.
As the Confederacy found out, a loose assembly of states all doing their own thing is no way to run a country.
Yeah, they had not learned from the failure of the first American Confederation. As the Confederacy found out, a loose assembly of states all doing their own thing is no way to run a country.

This cannot be stressed enough to the fuckwits of the U.S. who say the Confederate Flag represented "state rights".
The South had no problem with big bad government imposing its will on states, as long as that will was for slavery to continue. Once they saw Northern states were flexing their own state rights and having none of it, the South disavowed the government. "State rights" implies a collective defense of all state rights. Period.
The defense of the Confederate Flag put up by some assholes last year was quite possibly the most shameful demonstration of ignorance this country has seen in years. Morons.
Slavery remained in the USA after the Confederacy went away, the 13th Amendment ended slavery.
/threadThe Confederate battle flag is a banner of treason.
Slavers are the scum of the Earth.
Burn them.

My post wasn't about slavery.
Nah, white guilt folks are fully on (and sometimes driving) the NEVER FORGET train. Which is a good thing IMHO.Pretty much. Though I'm less than certain that white guilt want to erase history. Seems like you can't have guilt if you forget what happened.
