Anyone that saw last nights L-Word want to explain to me why Ivan freaked out so much when Kit walked in.

I can think of a few reasons. First, Ivan identifies as male with Kit. Think of it as reverse cross-dressing for a het married couple. If a woman walked in on her husband in drag - and didn't previously know or wanted to ignore his transvestism - then the husband would probably be equally upset.

Also, Kit identifies as straight. Ivan could be wanting to preserve that for her. Kit was visibly unsettled by it, too - I read her reaction as "I know Ivan is a woman, but I don't want to be exposed to it."

But that's just my perspective!

Details, please. What, exactly, did Kit walk in on, Ivan (a female who 'identifies' [] as male), dressed in...what? Feminine clothes or masculine clothes?

Neither, and that was the problem. Ivan was just coming out of the shower and his breasts weren't bound yet and his beard hadn't yet been applied.

I say "identifies as male" because I don't know if Ivan is a drag king (as I read on some website) or transgender (as it looked to me, though he obviously wasn't on hormones).

Okay, so I guess it's back to your question then. I'd guess that Ivan hadn't told Kit that Ivan was really (genetically, biologically) female?

Oh, and did they show Ivan's breasts? I love Cable. I really should get it one of these days.

No actually she knows... she has hung out with Ivan both as a male and female... although Kit is attracted to the male Ivan...keeps saying things like if only you were a man. So Ivan has been a man around Kit ever since. Guess I answered my own question then.

Anyway, you should get cable.. and get Showtime... this show freaking rocks, whether or not you're into the whole lesbian thing.. :) Great writing, and great conflicts.

We ought to just make this an L-Word forum for all L-Word discussion...

Anyway, you can rent the first season on DVD now.

So I guess she freaked because the sight kinda ruined her self-imposed illusion?

Ah, okay - I didn't realize she'd hung out with Ivan as a female too. I guess that was first season? I must have missed those. I was basing my babbling on what I saw Sunday night. :)

Before I become hostile because I have mis-understood your post
I will ask:

Are you rolling your eyes in sarcasam or because you do not think women can identify themselves as male?

eh... i still think it was a bit much... i mean being upset i can understand.. i mean you walked in on someone naked... but geez... she was telling her to leave... it seemed a bit over-dramatic to me.. i mean Kit is aware of what's underneath... owell...

Neither.

You know... you can buy or rent Season 1.
It would help everyone who is interested to get caught up.
And I'm not quite sure why Ivan freaked so much. Kit knows she's a she really. Maybe it wasn't so much about catching her not "made up"... but seeing the "equipment" (strap-on) on the dresser and staring at it??

augh! I missed it last night, and it's on again right now but I missed the first 15 minutes. what's happeniiiiiing?

ah well, I'll catch up. ;)

Although I've not been able to watch the series from what I've read explained I think I can understand where Ivan is coming from. As an FTM I'm not comfortable being seen in all my femininity by anyone, even someone that I've been with intimately. Because in my mind, I suppose.. I dont feel like that naked person is me. The me that I perceive doesn't have breasts... I suppose you could say that for some that ID as male nakedness is truly that. It reveals you completely and not the "you" that you want others to see. It's something that could be rather disconcerting.

Perhaps Ivan just really didnt want Kit to see "him" in that light... Perhaps it made him feel less masculine in a way...

I dont even know if any of what I said made sense... but there's my 2 cents...

I don't think Ivan is necessarily FTM, though. Definitely butch and definitely a king, but I don't think he feels like he's in the wrong body. I think he was just trying to project a certain image, and Kit coming in fucked with that for him.

Hell, I dunno. We probably won't ever know. But speculating is fun!
