One of my local towns has a 1930s Art Deco Fire Station but the Fire Brigade was founded in the 1850s.
In the late 1920s, the Town Hall, next to the Fire Station, caught fire. The Fire Brigade couldn't save the Town Hall, nor their Fire Station. They had two crews apparently on duty when the fire started next door.
The Town Hall held the records of who had, and had not, paid their local taxes. Town Hall staff tried to save the tax records but were impeded by some local residents who threw the saved records back into the burning building...
The Fire Brigade doesn't like to talk about its former Fire Station, even 90 years after it was replaced.
