REPORT: LARGEST MIDDLE EASTERN AIRLINE CUTS FLIGHTS TO U.S. DUE TO ‘WEAKENED DEMAND’
According to the CBC, this is “a direct response to dwindling demand” following restrictions imposed by the Trump administration such as a ban on certain electronics on planes from a variety of Middle Eastern and North African countries.
The CBC further states that Emirates had attempted to curb the discouragement among travelers by offering first-class passengers complimentary tablet use.
But alas, as a statement from Emirates said, “the recent actions by the U.S. government relating to the insurance of entry visas, heightened security vetting, and restrictions on electronic devices in aircraft cabins have had a direct impact on consumer interest and demand for air travel into the U.S.”
According to Reuters, Emirates flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando will drop to five a week next month, down from once daily. Seattle and Boston flights will take place once daily, down from twice daily.
Flights to Los Angeles will take a hit in July, down from twice a day to once.
The Star Tribune states that flights to the Americas accounted for 14% of Emirates revenue during the fiscal year of 2016.
It’s unclear how much of an impact cutting U.S. flights will have on the company’s bottom line.
