anyone have any suggestions?

Do you own one or use one for work that you really like or really hate?

I would be very thankful if you woule tell me the brand and model if you know it...

Thanks a bunch!

Oh NOW we're talking my language! *lol*

First questions, how much do you have to spend and what will you be aiming to do with it? Just the odd game and bit of word processing or Photoshop and Maya?

I use a Compaq, all I've ever owned. SOme people like them some hate them. I post at lit with my laptop exclusively.

As much as it takes... I'm a webdesigner, so I need the graphics ends... I'm thinking a ceiling of $2000

Must support 512megs ram...

Prefer athalon processor over a pentium...

I have a Compaq 1700

I have Dreamweaver on it and will try to see if I have space for Photoshop too, then I'll be all set!

Right, here's where I either crash and burn or take flight. Either that OR this whole thread becomes a religous crusade:eek:

I use a Titanium PowerBook 550 with 1GB of RAM, it's what I'm typing on right now. In my experience (and I am a professional geek) if web work is what you want to do then a Mac is about your best bet. As Apple have just released the upgraded (800MHz) PowerBooks then you should find the prices of the 550MHz and 667MHz versions falling. RAM is cheap at the moment too (at least it is here in the UK) so you shouldn't be paying over the odds for that.

At the end of the day, it's a matter of personal preference, it really is. But I genuinly get about 5 hours of battery life and they ARE fast computers, very fast indeed. I urge you to at least pop into a shop and check one out, maybe find a freind/collegue who has one and use it for a day.

Right... Seconds out, Round two! *lol*

oh dear...

One mention of The Mac and I kill the thread. They're not THAT bad...

Yes. Yes they are. I have an iBook and the graphics are great and it's fast, but it isn't compatible with anything! There are hardly any good games out there for it (not that I play them, anyway), and 99.9% of downloads don't work. It freezes all the time, lags too much, and is overall the worst computer I've ever used. Well, maybe not THE worst, but it's up there.

DEATH TO MACS!!!

You can usually crossgrade for very little if it's things like Illustrator, Photoshop, QuarkXPress etc...

If you download things for the wrong OS or for the wrong version (To high is bad, to low is usually ok) or for progs you don't have they don't work.

Fine. $22 dollars.

I run a Compaq Presario 1200........................I have Corel 8 , Adobe illustrator 10, Adobe Photo shop 6.0 all on mine.
I also have tons of images on mine.

Never had any problems myself..................

Yeah I'm hearing Compaq is supposed to be the best... I was thinking about a VIAO but I've heard lots of good things about Compaqs

Lol I know how to download stuff, thank you. ;) It just never works, even if it downloads.

And come on, $22? I fart in your general direction -- this laptop was brand new in 2000!

Anything less than $27 insults my intelligence. <sticks her nose up in the air>
