Langtry Saloon Shoot-out, Qualifying Round

Sometimes ya just gots to do it. I saw a suggestion for another shootout, and the first one I knew about was fun, so in the absence of other outlaw instigators, here goes.

Can you shoot the cap off a beer bottle? Try to qualify for the deadly game of survival...

Send 1 to 6 lines of verse to ME via PM, and I'll duplicate them here, assigning a number or a letter or something. Get all snippets of verse to me by 18:00 GMT March 09, 2005. I'll get them posted on this thread within 24 hours, good Lord willin' and the creeks don't rise.

Post NOMINATIONS on THIS thread, for TWO FINALISTS.

In vying for a nomination with one to six lines of verse, you need not submit a complete poem. Just give evidence of your skill as a versificator. Show a sampling of what you can do.

Final shoot-out will be a 20 to 30 line poem, unrhymed (except for incidental or accidental rhyme), with no limitation as to subject, rhythm, or anything else. Topic of the shooter's choice. Use a Derringer or a Colt .45, it's up to you!

Final shootists will be chosen solely on the number of nominations received. Resulting poems will be posted anonymously in this thread, and it's Reader's Choice. Whoever is seen to still be wiggling after the gunfight, wins.

Actually, everybody wins. It's a cool way to get good poems. :)

Edited: I misspelled "Langtry" ... *sigh*

that's a head scratcher, but I'll give it a 'SHOT'

I could be wrong about this (I don't think I am), but for us western folk (who invented 'western', thankyouverymuch), given the time deadline is six pm, for...

EST people it would be one pm (GMT -5)
CST people it would be twelve noon (GMT -6)
MST people it would be eleven am and (GMT -7)
PST people it would be ten am (GMT -8).

Not sure about Arizona, but Indiana is currently in CST zone (as these states do not change for daylight savings time).

Another way of determining what GMT is in relationship to your time zone is to look at the bottom left of the screen. At the bottom of my screen it has:

All times are GMT -6.

Which means I'm six hours behind GMT (Greenwich Mean Time... or at least that's what I recall it means... I digress...). Check that time against your clock in the lower right corner or on your taskbar (or any old clock that gives the correct time more than twice a day) as a guideline.

Welp, I think I aptly overexplained that. :D

kk...lines sent along, pardner...think I'll just set back an' enjoy the day...maybe clean my gun while I'm at it...<g>

Yikes! I just saw this...

That means I have 2 hours? Less, really, cuz I have to leave here in an hour...

Aiyiyi!!

Nominate Your Finalists

Ok, here they are. We have 5 who are eager to risk their poetic lives in another shootout. Each entry is numbered. The number corresponding to the snippet of verse is enclosed, with the verse, between "====" signs. There are but a few, but they are all damn good gunslingers, so scratch your heads, clean your glasses, and order an extra shot of tequila. Post, on THIS thread, your vote for a finalist. Here you go:

====
Wading through faded parchments,
Penned by men with dank souls,
Truth searing, falling off the horizon.

Blasphemy, liar, whore,
Head held high, spittle smeared face,
Shrouded hybrid tears, unfettered fears.

(1)
====

weathered and worn, as only the desert wind can do
tumbling through the dust...rolling over in my soul
her petticoats pinned back freeing her hands
the dog howled like a coyote in training
dry streets...dark doorways...black hearts
only three things worth anything in this sorry world

(2)
====

sine of our times --
parallel passion in soul slipping symmetry;
the acute pleasure-pain of love
raised to the power of two.

(3)
====

Vertebrae shivering blasts
Smoke bellows and swirls hot bores
strong aroma of black powder creeps
Two still aiming their Colts
shimmering flash of a silver glare
as one falls!

(4)
====

his weapon poised
thump!thump!
he went for me...
thump!thump!thump!

in this little death
I am reborn

====

These are the contestants. Nominate a number only, as seen here enclosed within the quotation-mark line breaks, by posting to THIS THREAD. The two of these who get the most nominations will have to shoot it out.

Let's say the deadline for nominations is 300 GMT, March 10. 2005. (Midnight, CST, 03/09/05).

Shoot-out will take place Friday, in Abilene, Texas at sunrise (6:50 a.m. CST or 12:50 p.m. GMT). Each contestant will have 45 minutes to tease his or her opponent into firing first. Both resulting volleys will be posted here, anonymously, and the readers of this thread will decide who lived and who was fatally shot. Deadline for voting on the winner will be 12 noon CST, or 1800 GMT, Saturday, March 12, 2005.

door number 5 (~_~)

I'm not sure what the guidelines were, but I'm basing my decision on what drew me the most emotionally. That said, (and this was a close and tough decision--flipping a coin on this one...) I'm choosing number 1.

all were so good.. vote for one I know I should... all to win I wish I could...my vote for #2 is solid as wood lol..
#2!
Du~

May I ask... is GMT the same as EST? thanx DU~

Good work! All five of you are to be commended. But since I can only vote once...

#3.

The man posts a challenge then doesn't stick around to see it through. :rolleyes:

He may be waiting til there are more votes. This Shoot Out is different than the others we've done. I like not knowing what I have to write til just a few minutes til its time to write it, as we do in the GunFights, but this one is different in the other ways. We'll just have to bite our nails and wait.

pardon my absence...

I had an emergency on the contstruction project that is my bread and butter... and could not be here.

Guess what won out?

Anyway, I'll tally up the votes and re-schedule the final duel, if that's kosher with everbody. It's all a fun game anyway, or at least that's what I've hoped.

I enjoy doing these kinds of things, but if I have a choice between having fun and getting paid $1900, I'm going to choose the money.

Now, things are much more settled. I'll return as soon as I digest all this. Thanks for patience.

Whew! I thought we had to limit them to 6 lines, which I did not do! I have to get foehn to send mine back- I didn't keep a copy. lol

Don't we get to see each others entire poem?

I suppose I need to go and write one, don't I? I took him at what he posted, and sent six lines of verse...just happened to get strung together when the list was made up and numbered. <g>
