Agreed. that was my mistake, even though I could afford it, I never should have taken my sabbatical. It is proving rather difficult to get back into the job market.

Been there myself, 10 years ago at the tail end of that recession. I thought I'd escaped, but no such luck.

I hated the word "downsized." Still do. I insisted on using the word "fired" as that is really what it felt like to me. I saw no difference. The outplacement agency got really frustrated with me, until I got results doing the job search MY way.

It took me another 2 years and several short term jobs to end up in long term employment again at a job I wanted to do for a company I wanted to work for. In the end, I was MUCH better off not staying at the company that fired me. I'd probably have never left on my own so they did me a great favor by pushing me out the door. But it was rough.

Lick your wounds for a day or two, but then get moving. There's another job waiting for you, you just need to find it.

I've got "mad skillz"... I'll be fine. I'm just... feeling like a shmuck. I gave this company far more of myself than I should have. I stuck with them when they needed me (I was offered a better job a month and a half back - they begged me to stay), and they bailed on me.

I should have been more selfish. I should have "looked out for #1".

I'll hit the papers first thing in the a.m. looking for work...
