I was initially contemplating this as a guy's line but it sounds nicer somehow when done with a woman using the line. So, a woman is at a bar, overhears a guy's name, decides she is interested, and says, "Hi Mark! How about buying me a drink?"

Pretending to know him but not recall where, she easily gets him to tell her all about himself as she does the same. Thus, instead of trying to fuck her as many other people who have bought her a drink have done, he is telling her all about himself.

Of course, this could still lead to sex if he eventually asked if maybe they'd met at <insert sex club/activity here>.

The purpose of the gambit is to force the gentleman the lady is interested to approach her differently. If used properly, the gambit will cause the gentleman to give an overview of his life, and the lady to reveal the same. Thus, she will know what college he went to, what his interests are, what he does for a living, etc. Asking someone to buy a drink without this technique may cause the askee to misinterpret the request as interest in sex, rather than interest in a long term relationship. The guy will be thinking of the girl as a past acquaintance rather than as, "the girl I just met at a bar."

I suppose the boytoy/dominatrix route might work too, especially for a reluct story wherein she wants to find out if he will be missed. Checking for this is less likely to rouse suspicion if the guy thinks the girl knows him. This is especially true if the location is a bit seedy or caters to BDSM fans.
