Labor Day

Every effort had been made in this country to depoliticize Labor Day, and strip it of any significance other than barbecue. Therefore, I feel obligated to point out the following truths:

(1) The workers and peasants of the world collectively produce all the world's goods and services. The owning and managerial classes are useless parasites who do NO socially necessary labor whatsoever, yet suck off a large percentage of the surplus produced by labor for themselves.

(2) The workers and peasants comprise the overwhelming majority of humanity. It is far easier for the many to suppress the few than it is for the few to suppress the many.

(3) If the toiling and exploited masses are united, there is no force on earth which can withstand them. Conversely, the capitalist ruling class seeks to keep the working class divided-- along ethnic, gender, religious, national, etc. terms-- in order to keep it weak, and thus deliberately stirs up and perpetuates the vilest and most backward prejudices.

That is all.

You forgot a truth:

(4) Every labour (correct spelling by the way.. sheesh you Americans...) day, the Eskimos and Stampeders always put on a classic football game that has been attended by yours truly every year for the past 6 years... Going on 7 tommorow :D

REDWAVE - if you didn't want to come to my barbeque, all you had to do was say NO.

redwave...

Any idea why the Americans celebrate Labour Day in Sept? When the rest of the world celebrates 1 may?

I heard once that it was moved in order to distance the US labour movements from the Intl. ones and the socialist tendencies.

Coolville

Ding ding ding ding ding . . . Give that man a cigar.

Interestingly, International Workers Day (May 1) commemorates the "Haymarket Square" incident, which occurred in the United States in 1886. During the world's first ever general strike, a police provocateur threw a bomb in Haymarket Square in Chicago, and it was blamed on anarchists, and used as an excuse for bloody suppression of the strike.

Fast forward to today, where striking teachers were recently put in jail merely for exercizing their right to strike, and where Bush threatens the ILWU (lonshoremen's union) with strikebreaking by federal troops, in the name of "national security" (i.e., protecting the profits of business).

IS THAT WHAT LABOR DAY IS ABOUT?

Damn it, I thought that it had something to do with all of the pregnant women in the world going into labor.

And here I am in the maternity ward with my camcorder. DAMN

here in Dania, May 1 is still celebrated widely. Thousands descend on parks to listen to music and hear politicians. Fortunately, copious amounts of beer are consumed which actually makes it fun. Add to that thousands of red flags and singing Internationale, and you have a nice day out.

Oh so it seems. I don't take part. I enjoy the day off.

Berlin Mayday

Sounds good, Coolville, but in Berlin they really know how to do IWD up right. They have big, militant demonstrations which usually result in street battles with the polizei . . .

DAMN IT, THAT'S NOT FAIR

To horribly misquote William Faulkner:
Between riots and beer, I choose beer.
