Perhaps because many White people in the South thought the bomning of Black churches was exactly what those "people deserved"....
Perhaps many White people in the South in still think that the lives of Black people are worth far less than the life of a dog...
Perhaps, as indicated by by the "interner porn basher", many White people in the South are sympathetic to the KKK..as evidenced foe their love of the Confederaye Flag....

The last time..
the KKK tried to recruit me i was over at a bud's house.
I did not have anything else to do for a few hours so i decided to listen to their sales pitch.
I'm always interested in the way evil works in the world. A person needs to recognize evil when you see it or hear it.
To do this you must study the ways of evil people.
Here's a list of things i came out of about six hours of talking with these people. A couple of them where in about the middle ranks of the KKK.
1.These assholes are dangerous.
2.If you really want to know what they are up to read Hitler's book. This is their basic pattern.
3. They use what we today call the "race card" in every way possible.
4. The KKK wants to take over the world starting with the united states.
5.The kkk wants to replace our goverment officals any way they can with people who think like they do.
6. In the end the only people they want left alive and not under their control is themselves..and it does not matter what race you are.
7. They either think they are doing the right thing or they are so hungry for power they can not see the evil in it. Ithink many just do not care.
8. They spend a lot of money on literature. They even had a king james version bible rewritten to read the way they wanted it to.!
9. They are always on the look out for new prospects for membership.
Later at home, after a long shower; I thanked God that i was not on their side.

What took so long for the conviction. It took the US Supreme Court to declare that Afro-Americans were equal in the eyes of the law. And between that time and even up until now. A white man in some parts of the South will never be convicted by a jury of his "peers" for a racial crime. Even getting a conviction today can be tough in some area's....And not just picing on the south, We have the same problem here in the north and everywhere. The real reason is still the same....

CB - you're right when you say that Northerners are just as 'prejudiced' as Southeners. I've had boys tell me that they thought I was really cute and the only thing 'wrong' with me was that I was black...as if this is a bad thing. I lived in Washington State at the time. On the other hand, when I lived in Tennessee, I had a couple of white men who were REALLY interested in dating me. It's not about borders/North and South. I've dealt with prejudice all my life. I'm sure that anyone who's not white probably has at one time or another.
Do I think racism had something to do with the 'delay' in prosecuting this case? Of course. This crime occurred at a time when it was against the law for whites and blacks to sit together in the same building. Black women were expected to be housekeepers, black men janitors. The only socializing between the races was when your housekeeper came over and took care of your house. Well, unless you consider the raping of black women by white men socialization. The prosecutors, most likely, knew they wouldn't be able to get a conviction for this case and decided not to pursue it. Life back then was more like 'To Kill A Mockingbird' than 'A Time To Kill' (isn't that the name of that movie with Samuel Jackson and Matthew McConaughey?). I, personally, feel honored that I live in a country where, years after the fact, justice could finally occur. This must be a great relief for the families of those dead children. At least they got justice. What about all of the black men who were hung from trees because they weren't subservient enough to a young white child or they happened to look a white person in the face on the street? It won't happen in a court of law but things have changed enough over the years where, if that happened today, it would go to court. BIG change.
As far as the KKK is concerned, they are able to gain in membership because they prey on people's ignorance/fears - the same as any other hate organization. When bad things happen to you and you don't want to accept responsibility for your actions, you feel helpless to change it, etc., it's easy to blame someone else - especially if that someone looks different than you. It was the same thing with the Black Panther organization. They felt helpless - changes weren't occurring fast enough for them so they blamed white people and spewed hate filled garbage. Malcolm X was the same way. What the hell was that cream in the coffee comment, anyway? My problem with hate organizations such as the KKK/Skinheads/etc., is that these organizations go beyond words and hurt people! That's when you go too far.
Andra - as far as the black thugs comment - it's not the same thing. Yes, these idiots are violent and they need to be taken out to a remote area and have the dog shit whipped out of them - but they aren't organized, spewing hate filled crap and trying to exterminate/hurt a 'race' or 'group' of people. I personally think we should take all the gangbangers and violent racists and put them all in Alcatraz and let them all fend for themselves!
I know I'm babbling, and please forgive me, but this is one of the things dear to my heart. I don't want my children growing up hearing, "I'd sure like to date you but you're black."
By the way, just what do you consider a racist? Is it someone who has a preconceived notion about someone of another race? Someone who doesn't associate with people outside of their race? Or people who spews the 'us' and 'them' rhetoric? Any takers??
