If George Washington had become King of the US, who would be our monarch today? Surely someone has figured this out. Surely some think tank, some scholar, some government study, some curious individual or some something has researched the lineage and determined who would be ruling the US today.

Does anyone know?

Any thoughts?

Exhaustive study was done two years ago by the Rand Institute.

It would be Al Gore.

OK, I'm joking.

Seriously, they figured either Weird Al Yankovich or Carott Top.

Impossible to tell teach. Dynastic marriages are often arranged, so even looking at today's descendants wouldn't tell you much. R.E. Lee married into the Washington family. Arlington National Cemetary is on the poperty of the Washington family. put there in part to spite Lee.

For my money, the answer is someone not of the Washington line. One family holding power through all the trials & travails of the last 200 years seems fanciful to me.

He had no children and I don't know how the succession goes in that event - brother?

I guess both Colly and Ted could be right. King Top.

Can't you just hear what kind of song Steve Martin could write with that?

It would be brother, then nephew. Don't know where after that.

I remember reading a few years ago about somebody actually tracing the line that there would have been. Using the usual line of succession, the king would be some rather ordinary person who was surprised to learn that he would have been king. I don't remember much about the person except that he has achieved moderate sucess in whatever his chosen field was. I mean, it wouldn't be some loser, which would have been ironic.

A problematic question at best, because GW squashed the idea before possible rules of succession could be debated.

It's likely that they would have adopted the "usual lineof xuccession" but it's equally possible that the would have put some spin on successionto distance theselves from the English succession; possibly a "King For Life" with the sucession open to anyone he might propose with congressional approval.

Of course the proposal to make GW president came before the Constitutional convention was formed and the "Advise and consent of congress" principle hadn't been raised yet.
