kinds of feedback I don't understand

Why would someone complain about a story for basically belonging to the category in which it has been placed?

The reason I ask is because my Loving Wives stories (one of which has a red H beside it, and the other is brand new) have gotten a surprising amount of negative feedback that would seem to condemn "hot wife" fantasies in general. I can't imagine what else someone expects to read when they click on stories that are clearly categorized as "Loving Wives," especially when the description line offers further clarification that a story should be expected where the wife has sex with men who aren't her husband.

I know I can't be alone in getting this kind of feedback. I checked around a bit on the forums, and noticed one thread where some authors of Nonconsent stories complained about negative feedback that condemned their stories for being nonconsensual!

What's the matter with people? Why read a story from a category that you know is going to upset or offend you? And then why complain about it for satisfying the basic expectations of that category?!?

Most disturbing of all is negative feedback that seems to address the story characters as real people engaged in real activities. I mean, I guess it's kind of flattering that someone could mistake my imaginary creations for living, breathing people in the real world, but it's also pretty startling to see judgemental hostility personally directed at them in that light.

Finally, considering the fantasy nature of most erotica, I'm surprised how often I am taken to task for not presenting realistic consequences for my characters' sexual adventures. The whole point of fantasy, it seems to me, is that it allows these kinds of things to be imaginatively explored without having to worry about negative consequences. Why would I want to write--or anyone want to read--a sexual fantasy that ends in divorce, disease, jealousy, heartbreak, unwanted pregnancy, etc., etc.?!? Yes, if someone were to really act out some of the adventures I describe, they might very well face such consequences. That's why I'm writing about them here instead of acting them out!

Well, I just needed to rant, but I'd certainly be interested in hearing other people's thoughts. Anyone?

hiya sweetie,
iv just read ur first story and loved it. i kno wat u mean about the classification thing tho. my stories can fit into more than one category, its just a matter of picking the right one, but u were right here. the problem people are probably finding is that theres anal and group sex in there too, but what do they expect wen they are reading other peoples fantasy??

keep up the ggod work, if they dont like it, the can stop reading!!

Cat,

I haven't written a "loving wives" tale but a friend has, and experienced the same thing. Those who read the Loving Wives section do seem to be especially vitriolic, and I agree it's hard to work out what they thought they would get from a story in this category, if not what you'd produced.

It's a wild guess, but maybe some of the readers are (or have been in the past) going through such an experience, or have been cheated upon by their partners. It may be a form of masochism to then read the story, and some kind of therapy to complain about it.

I've had a similar, but lesser, problem, with people reading stories I've posted in BDSM or Fetish, and then e-mailed me to say, basically, "eeeuuww". Well, tell me it's badly written, tell me the characters are poorly drawn, but I'm not sure disliking a BDSM subject is a valid criticism of a BDSM story.

In terms of realism, there has been another thread on this recently (can't remember who started it - sorry!). I agree that the site is essentially fantasy, and you have the right to avoid some of the less erotic realities of a situation if you choose. It is, after all, your story and your "property". There's a "how to" section for people who want the true-life ups and downs.

Hope that's helpful/relevant

Don't worry about bad feedbacks.

The world is run by the idiots.

So, it's more likely there are yet more idiots around us.

Have a nice day,

CV

Take comfort in knowing you are not alone. I get the same thing with our BDSM genre. Have stories in the top list, and openly say what to expect in them in the description, but you keep getting the ones who complain and denigrate it as revolting, bad, disgusting etc. If they don't agree with the genre, why do they waste their time reading and commenting, usually under the guise of 'anonymous'? Could it be they just have nothing better to do? If so, that is really sad.

Thanks for answering, everyone!

spiders: I understand what you're saying, but the thing is, nobody complained about the anal or group sex. The people I mean sent negative feedback about the wife being a "Loving Wife" (they used different words, of course--I think just about every mean-spirited epithet for a sexual woman has been thrown at her), which is exactly the category of the story! Thanks, by the way, for reading one of my stories. I checked out your Boss story, too--outstanding!

steve: Your paragraph about "ew" reactions to your BDSM stories is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. Interesting that you say your friend has noticed stronger reactions to his Loving Wives stories than in other categories. I guess the wife stories really push some hot buttons for people. The first time I ran across a story like that on the internet, I was shocked by how strongly it affected me--and it wasn't even that well written. Then I was surprised to see just how popular wife stories are on the internet. Not only does the fantasy rate its own category here at literotica, but it's one of the largest categories, far outstripping many of the others. One interesting thing I've noticed is that many, many of the narrators in these stories claim to be very jealous "normally" (i.e. when they're not acting out this fantasy). You're probably right about there being some conflicting, masochistic allure inherent in this kind of story.

Chilled Vodka: Haha--ain't it the truth!

Again, thanks everyone!
